Car Tyres

Hi folks,

I have always had rear wheel drive cars and if 2 tyres were more worn than the others I would buy 2 new tyres and fit them to the front wheels and then put the older ones on the back. Gives me better steering and braking while the rear tyres just push me in a straight line

My wife's car is front wheel drive, she needed 2 new tyres so I expected they would put the 2 new ones on the front for better steering and braking, move the 2 front ones which are still OK to the rear and toss the older rear ones.

They have advised her that for better grip in the wet it is better to have the new ones on the rear leaving the front ones as they were (about 60% tread so OK)

What do you guys do with front wheel drive cars when fitting 2 new tyres ?

hmm, I had replaced two new tyres for my Holden VE, which is rear wheel drive, earlier this year and the guys at work told me it is recommended to put the new tyres at the back and the older ones to the front. (Holden specialist only)

For our KIA, which is front wheel drive, we just recently recently purchased a set of four tyres. However, in discussions with the tyre place about my options, they said if I only purchased 2 tyres, then the new ones would go on the front, while the older tyres would go on the rear. (Tyre shop only)

Make of that what you will.

The best tyres should go on the front.

I generally rotate my tyres every second service then replace them all when I have about 2mm tread left. I don't wear them right down to the markers.

So Pirellis at the front and Blue Streak at the rear : )

That happens more often than you'd think, but in reverse.

A common scenario is the customer comes in and it's the first time for new tyres on their car since bought new.

New cars usually run with higher-end brand names and of course; cost more - especially late model Commodores, and almost all the trendy European cars and SUV's.

The customer finds out the cost, then proceeds to have a coronary, then asks for something cheaper.

You know; a tyre that;
a) Will last 100,000km's
b) Quiet as a ghost
c) Sticks like shoit to a blanket
d) Costs $5 each

Presto! Rotate the two existing Continentals or Brigestone Potenzas (OE) to the back, and a nice new pair of "Gung Lung" on the front.:D

tyre shopping today (12) for a $160K vehicle
any garbage on the drive, 8 of em and they dont do much each, remolds, retreads, regrooves ~$200 each
but the 4 steer tyres are brand new, brand name, steer pattern, ~$700,
the front end does all the braking and steering, 42 tonne hits anything hard,
not worth the risk,

why buy a u-beaut car, and not use safety gear,

tyres are safety gear
