Concrete Tilt Up construction vs Brick

Having some musings about construction methods for the baby apartment.

I could build it "a la Perth" which is double brick outer walls, concrete pads (ground and middle floor) and single brick internal walls.

OR

I could build it concrete tilt up panels.
- possibly cheaper
- better thermal properties (using modern insulated panels)
- could be quicker
- is commonly used for commercial and apartment buildings
- can be used in conjunction with bricks, weatherboard etc and made to look decent eg http://www.thehomepage.com.au/property/residential/134-ocean-vista-dr-coolum-beach/341380 or http://sanctumdesign.com.au/products/tilt

Thoughts?

I'm not sure what the construction experts would say (I know very little about that side of things) but anything that isn't "a la Perth" would be a nice change aesthetically speaking.

And I agree that a well planned concrete design would have the potential to look great. Not sure about what the hiccups might be compared to a standard Perth build though.

Did a quick search couldn't find it , there was a thread on here some time ago
with pic's on construction of some nice designed homes using tiltup construction.

I'm becoming more convinced this might be the way to go. I wonder what Aaron Sice will think when he returns from his holidays.

I found some good USA Concrete Homes magazines for free at http://www.concretehomesmagazine.com

I've always been a fan of alternative construction methods. If I ever build my own home again then I'll definitely be seriously considering concrete or other alternative methods.

myf, im not a fan of tilt up at all for residential purposes.

its very limiting as to what you can do, as well.

lets have a chat about what outcome you want to achieve with an alternative construction before you set your heart on anything....?

It's taken all night to come up with..............

Don't worry it's not set in concrete :)

Hey Boods - what do you use?

Depending upon the area, development, as well as "market expectations" (unfortunately this is the problem when trying to utilize new methods/materials), we use a combination of tilt panel, brickwork, lightweight steel frame etc.

Our Perth projects will all be concrete/brick for the time being.

We are exploring the use of SIPs, however are finding it hard to get a BCA/fire engineer willing to spend enough time investigating the system to enable sign off on multiple dwellings upon completion.

Boods
