Cost to replace Telstra pits

Has anyone had to replace Telstra pit to change their height? I just got a quote for around $1400 each, which I think is a bit extreme. I probably can't do much about it though, as there's only one local mob who can do it, and someone from out of town, even if they were cheaper, would add travel costs to their quote.

We have four pits needing replacing and I reckon they are using the fact that three of them are asbestos to jack up their quote.

Yes, don't get me started on the pipe and pits we are paying for that will sit empty for years or possibly forever until the NBN fairy comes to visit.

Always thought that if I was operating a backhoe I would carry my passport and "escape money" at all times.

Abandon hope all who dig up a Telstra cable.

All utility companies favorite phrase: "at the developers cost".

Then you hear a whining noise in the sky and watch Telstra Logo'd jets firebomb your bank account

Did you hear about that guy who accidentally cut the fibre optic line between Sydney and Canberra and was sued for something like 3 billion by Telstra before committing suicide? (or so the said one of my lecturers once upon a time)

I notice that they only wanted to jail her for 3 years, versus the aussie guy and 3 billion bucks. In my professional opinion, this is due to either:

a) only 4 people in all of Georgia have internet connections anyway, or
b) aussies are very, very fond of 24/7 porn

the jury is out...

Depends on the size of pits but they are not cheap. I am assuming there is some services ie a 100pr cable to also be removed then reinstalled.
Looking at about 2hrs min just to terminate 1 end of that that if all goes well.

Edit: I just laid my hand on a recent invoice with a 500lx330wx525D fibro-cement communications pit. Lets say about $200 retail. Not sure if my supplier gave me a big discount I remember them being more expensive.

It's a 50 mm conduit with about 30 pairs in it. I'm not sure whether they need to disconnect and reterminate or not.

In other news, we've had some fun after finding some old cable in the ground next to the existing stuff and lost a day's work waiting around to find out if it's dead or not.

The major cost of replacing a pit is D&R (disconnect and reconnect of the services in the pit.

If its a lot of cable it can take some time and there for be expensive. The pit itself is at most a few hundred.

How do you know its 30 pair? There is no such as a 30 pair single cable. Might be 15 x 2 pairs or 3 x 10 pair cables or whatever.

If its a public pit its usually chockers, private, much less.

They won't disconnect any cables. They will break the old pit around the conduit and cut the bottom out of the new pit to slip it over the conduit.

$200 in materials, $1200 for guys to stand around leaning on shovels.

They had it done in half a day. That works out at around $1100 per hour. That's for three guys and a mini-excavator. I'm in the wrong job!
