Disclaimer - 'not to be taken internally

Based on the number of posts recently discussing financial and tax planning issues, I thought I would post a friendly reminder to everyone.

This is a discussion board hosted by the Somers to promote discussion and the exchange of knowledge about property investing. They make no claims or promises about the quality or accuracy of the content contained in here. Unless a person identifies themselves as suitably qualified in a particular area, then you should assume that the person is NOT qualified and any comments they make could be incorrect.

This certainly applies to me. Since I have been posting a lot lately on matters of finance and taxation, I just wanted to make sure that people understood who I am and what I do.

I am a consultant in the Information Technology industry. I work for a large international computer company as a consultant and educator.

I am NOT an accountant, nor a financial planner, nor a tax expert. I have no qualifications in any of these areas.

My posts are a matter of amateur opinion only and should always be taken that way. If I am wrong, I expect to be challenged by the knowledgeable people on the forum. If there is a difference of opinion on a grey area, I expect the difference to be stated - that is the point about the forum - get some debate happening. However, many of the grey areas on matters of finance and taxation are best left to discussions with a professional !

I always advocate using suitably qualified professionals for all advice - I use an accountant who is also a qualified financial planner and tax specialist for all finance, investing and taxation related advice, I use a mortgage broker to advise on and find the most suitable finance products for me, I use an insurance broker to advise on and find the most suitable insurance products for me, and I use a toothbrush to brush my teeth. The opinions I express here are not necessarily the opinions of these professionals either !

I generally try and back up my comments with references (particularly from the ATO), but even these can be misleading or taken out of context.

Some of the topics we have covered lately are quite advanced areas and indeed some tax matters are not clearly covered by ATO rulings, and all are subject to change.

So please, please, please, go and pay for advice. Sure, use the forum for getting ideas, but then take these ideas to your professional advisor and ask them "how can I make this work for me ?"

Hi Sim,
Gosh what an interesting post.

Now i have a hairy one for you!
You know that cute little "do da thing" you do with your signature at the end of your posts?
How do you do it?
I know you responded to this question before but i just cant ever find what I am after in the Archive section, can you point me in the right direction, where is it in the archive?
Now I understand from your post you are a professional "educator and consultant" in the I.T. field.
So does that mean if I cant follow your instruction for the "do da" thing and get the desired result - then I have grounds to sue? Cause there is this nice little property I have my eye on.........

Regards,
Denise

I am not self employed... you'd need to take up any grievances with my employer :p

I also do not have any formal education qualifications (although both my parents are primary school teachers and my sister is a secondary school teacher - does that count ?).

My "signature", or "do da" as you call it ! Is simply a graphic file I created (using a little program called Xara WebStyle v2) which I have uploaded to my personal website.

My signature consists of literally the following text:

<IMG SRC="http://users.bigpond.net.au/sim/personal/images/sim.gif" ALT="Sim'">

and that give you this...

And also a track record of telling corny jokes and knowing way too much about the StarWars universe ;-)
