Does polished porcelain tiles really have to be pre-sealed?

Wondering if there are any tile experts out there....

5yrs ago when we bought polished porcelain tiles there was the option of 2 types....pre-sealed and un-sealed....

Past couple of weeks we've been looking at polished porcelain again and all the tile shops have the pre-sealed and un-sealed options. The pre-sealed ones are significantly more expensive (about $15-25/m2). We asked the question to the salesman whether its essential or not and he basically said if you don't seal it and you spill coffee, wine or even walk on the tiles with wet mud, it will stain the tiles and leave water marks. Not sure if this is entirely true or its just another 'product' they're trying to sell us.

Anyone have any idea whether what they're telling us is true or not?

p.s. they tell us only require to seal polished porcelain - not necessary for glazed porcelain (matte/gloss finish).
