Driveway

Anyone have any experience in paving driveways ?

Council is making us pave the driveway on one of our properties and I am looking for suggestions on how to do it and indications of price ?

I assume that cement would be cheapest... can anyone suggest a figure per metre (or square metre - or however it is measured) ?

As an alternative, since it is an up market house, I was considering using paving bricks for a bit more style. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a comparative cost ? The length of driveway is quite long, so I'm thinking this might be prohibitive.

Anything else I need to consider ?

Hi Sim,

I used to be in the Landscaping game many years ago & would recommend getting paving specialists to do the job, rather than yourself if you have no experience.

The costs wont be cheap, but the effect of a quality paved driveway will only add val;ue & appeal to your property.

10 years ago I was charging $50 m2 supply & fix, but I understand now it should be still around the same price (how's that for getting out at the right time Sim).

Concrete base would be best but not essential, next would be roadbase, packed & levelled correctly.

Get quotes (3-4) on the job, & checkout their most recent jobs to satisfy yourself of the quality of workmanship (lots of shoddies out there) I used to use a full photo album of previous jobs with clients No's to ring for recommendations.

So that;s just a few points to consider Sim.
Hope that helps a little.

Regards
Paul

Sim,

Where is the property? I can recommend a really good paver in the Adelaide area. We got him to do our house as we saw his work at another development. Now he does work for the builder that built our house and is just about to start on my sister-in-law's place. Met me know if you want his details.

Sim,
Make sure the sewer is Ok if paving over it.
Especially if earthenware. You don't want to dig up the pavers a short time after laying.

Sim,

if a sour is under the drive way, using other alternatives may be the way, ie. Lilidale topping which looks nice when compacting (good to sprinkle some cement in it, which will make it harder when compacted), especially when you have nice pine or sleepers on each side of the drive, creates a nice effect...

Cheers,

Manny.

I recently looked into doing some asphalt driveways on a couple of semi rural small properties. The preparation is basicly the same as for pavers and there are a few small contractors around who do it apart from road crews.
Asphalt is very popular in the states and can be coloured if required and I cannot figure out why it is not promoted here for domestic use. It is extremely cost effective
and requires little maintenance, and is it any uglier than concrete?.
Maybe someone here has actually done some asphalting.

Nothing wrong with asphalting as long as the person doing it knows what they are doing - very important so check out their previous jobs. Looks very smart and doesn't need any maintenance although many years down the track it may need a re coat.

Sim,
being a landscape/paver myself, I suggest the only way to pave a driveway properly is to first lay 70mm reinforced concrete. Then screed 15-20mm washed river sand to smooth out the bumps and lay on top of this. Secure the edges with cement haunch and wash-in sand-cement grout.
You will have an attractive and very stable driveway that will not develop any dips and wales that give paving a terrible look.
Cheers,
Thorpey!

Thanks Thorpey... can you give any ballpark figures (per m2) as to what this type of quality might cost. I'm still trying to work out budgets.
