During a 'Re-assessing the Global Nuclear Order' conference in January, Prof Siracussa said discussions about 'inevitable' war between the US and China were quite open and on the table.

They were discussing the inevitable war with China, he said.

This will happen. This is about power.

So who would fire the first shot? America, "if things spin out of control", Prof Siracussa said.

"I'd say the war with China will probably take place in the next 10 years" he said.

Isn't it a real possibility that Russia pushed to a corner hence they are forced to take a hard & harsh action?

If you watched a previous Russian documentary when Putin was rising in his power that's exactly what he said, when he was much younger when he was poor and lived with mum rats came out and when pushed into the corner he learned one vital lesson, then they will jump.
Well whether that will happen time will tell....I have no idea and I plan to worry when it happens, only then, since I have no control over it now!

Your vote is more powerful than you think! (the vote you make with your dollars as well as on election day).

Which 'power groups' will you give your money/votes too - those that push for war or those against it? (look past the spin and at their actions).

do we have any 'power groups' that push against war?
australia only has two power groups and both labor and liberals seem to be in support of war.

also with regards to making your vote count - while you can guarantee that you will look past the spin, how can you ensure that millions of aussies will do too? otherwise your vote will just get lost amongst those that believe media propaganda

well, compare the number of foreign military bases that so called peaceful democracies have, to that one of evil dictatorships, and you will see who's evil.

I'm pretty confident that the learned professor is wrong. At what institution does he do his research?

I would also be interested to know about his history. If he's generally a conservative guy I'd be willing to listen to him. If he's got a life long history of making outrageous (negative) predictions then he's not worth a second of my time.

Yeh, RMIT. Articles like that seem to be PR driven, if you're an academic outside one of the main research unis you really strugle to get your work into peer reviewed journals and this is one of the KPIs at universities these days. PR and exposure for the Universities is a good way around this.

If he was up the road at Melbourne I might have listened.

Second rate is a bit harsh. I would use the words mid tier. It's not a bad uni, but it isn't as prestigious as a Melbourne or Sydney and doesn't attract the same academic talent. Nevertheless, it has a good reputation as a teaching institution with regard to Engineering etc.

But full disclosure, I'm a Melbourne grad: so I guess I would say that.

Haha this thread is hilariously all over the place. War, honey, volcanoes, investing, socialism! :p Somersoft pays off with the entertainment factor tonight

Incorrect.

There are more than two political parties in Australia, and those who understand how our voting system works will also understand that voting for these parties is not a 'wasted vote'. The wasted vote is the one that isn't made.

Personally I vote for a party that:
  • has been flat out against war and the invasion of the middle east (and other countries) and
  • does not accept corporate donations (and is therefore not controlled by those who profit from war)

The 'there's only two parties worth voting for' concept is a myth perpetuated by those who control the government because it makes it easier for them to control. They can't own everyone.
