FAQ: Guidelines for signatures and avatars

There are two features of this forum that allow you to add graphics or text to every post you make. Both can be set in your options in the user control panel ("user cp" button at the top of the page when you are registered).

1. Signatures.

Signatures allow you to have some text or a graphic appear at the bottom of every post you make. Typical things you might like to have appear here are:

- your name (although this is not really necessary as your nickname appears on every post regardless
- a funny tagline (keep it clean !)
- your email address - email addresses are not shown automatically anywhere in the forum. If you want people to know your email address, you could put it in your signature.

However, we must set some guidelines for what is acceptable in signatures:

All signatures should not exceed the following size limits, and you can't have both text and images.

  • For text signatures: 4 lines normal size, 8 lines small size and up to 90 chars per line. Font sizes above 2 are not allowed.
  • For images in signatures: 1 image up to 300 pixels wide, 125 pixels tall and 20k in size

2. Avatars

Avatars are images which appear under your nickname over to the left of your posts. These are usually images which users choose to "identify" themselves, often something symbolic.

Our guidelines are simply that you are not allowed to choose an avatar until you have posted at least 10 times on the forum. We would like to treat this as a type of "reward" for users contributing to the forums.

We do not supply any avatars for you to choose from at this stage, so you will be required to upload your own. Read the software FAQs for more information.

Images to be uploaded for an avatar must be no more than 50x50 pixels, with a maximum file size of 20000 bytes.

If you find signatures or avatars annoying, you may turn them off ! Look at the "Edit Options" page of your user cp, find the "Thread View Options" section and set "Show user's signatures in their posts?" to no to hide signatures and set "Show user's avatar in their posts?" to no to hide avatars.

This is a good idea if you have a very slow internet connection, as all these images will slow down your pages to a certain degree.

Notes:

Images in signatures or avatars must not contain explicit, suggestive, or crude images. If an image is likely to cause real offence to anyone, it must be removed.

We do NOT allow animated images in signatures or in avatars. We feel that while cute and amusing, this can be annoying and distracting to the real purpose of the posts.

You can read more about how to use these featurs in the software FAQs ("f.a.q." button at the top of the page)

Most importantly, we reserve the right to change these requirements or to disallow these features altogether at any time, especially if frequent abuse occurs.

If you do not follow these guidelines you will be asked to remove your image. If the image is obviously inappropriate, the administrators may remove these from your profile. Continued abuse of these features may cause you to be banned from this forum.

Due to overwhelming demand, we have decided to change the guidelines for signatures on the forum.

Effective immediately graphics will not be allowed in signatures.

You can still attach or link to images within your posts.

For text signatures:

2 lines huge size (font size=3),
3 lines normal (large) size (font size=2), or
4 lines small size (font size=1)

Up to 80 chars per line. Font sizes above 3 ("huge") are not allowed.

Commercial signatures (advertising your company and/or services) are allowed, but they should be discreet and not distract from the posts themselves.
