First post on the FAQ forum

From: Apprentice Millionaire

Thanks Mike for creating the first topic in the FAQ forum. It may be because I use Netscape, but all I see when I click on the link in that post is the first post of the topic. One then needs to click on "Entire topic" to get the rest. The following link may be a little more useful (at least for Netscape users):
http://bne003w.server-web.com/~wb013/read?116,30e#116

Hi Jacques,

Don't worry, you don't have a Netscape problem. I deliberately included the URL of the first post in the thread instead of the URL of the Entire Topic for a good reason.

I agree with you that it would be more convenient to link to the Entire Topic in the first instance but there appears to be a problem with that.

I just performed a test by replying to a post within the thread called "Spell Checker".
Here is the URL of the first post in the thread:
First topic:
http://bne003w.server-web.com/~wb013/read?100,30

When I clicked Entire Topic, the five posts appeared and, as you would expect, the end of the URL is slightly different. e#100 has been added.
Entire topic with 5 posts:
http://bne003w.server-web.com/~wb013/read?100,30e#100

The following URL is associated with my test reply post. As you can see, it is different, again.
My post:
http://bne003w.server-web.com/~wb013/read?4328,30

Now, comes the interesting part. After my post was included in the thread, which is now 6 posts long, the URL for the Entire Topic has also changed.
Entire topic with my additional post:
http://bne003w.server-web.com/~wb013/read?4328,30e#4328

So, you see, if I put an Entire Topic URL in to the AM Conference, then only the original thread will appear even though further Reply posts may have been added to the thread as people research those old threads and add to them.
Try this out yourself before replying to this post.

Note the URL for the Entire Topic before you reply to this post. Then check it again after your reply. You see a difference at the end of the URL.

I'll clarify this with Ian Somers and get back to you.

Regards, Mike

Hi Mike,

I hope you did not take my post as a criticism, because it was not meant to be! I admit I had not tested as you did, and it certainly seems to be more than just a trivial matter to create a link to an entire thread. Thanks for your efforts!

Hi Jacques,

I certainly didn't take your post as a criticism. In fact, I should have prefaced my last post with a "Thankyou" for raising an issue I wasn't aware of. I had my suspicions but only validated them after your post.

As far as the AMG Conference is concerned, I am looking for everyone's input to make it as user friendly as possible. If there are any wholesale changes to make, it will be easier to make them now rather than later.

Regards, Mike
