Flight-path maps

As a general rule for airport noise, look at google earth or near map or whatever and draw a line straight along the runway centrelines from the runway ends out for about 10 miles. If you really get upset at jet noise (which is getting a lot quieter, though more frequent) avoid buying inside say 2-3 miles either side of those lines. On departure the noise 10+ miles out is a LOT less than inside that (if the departure does not involve a turn - which it usually does) and on arrival (though it depends on bizarre vectoring and arrival procedures) thrust is generally only about 20% of takeoff power and therefore quieter.

If you are really concerned, live near the Blue Mountains (Kurrajong etc). Aircraft always stay away (and are kept away) from big hills and big buildings!

Australian airports are controlled in an embarrassing manner - if pilots and controllers (as opposed to politicians) were allowed to design arrival and departure routes, there would be a LOT less noise. Unfortunately until you stop voting for them there will be no changes!!

After the second runway

Looks like Bulimba / Hawthorne in for a surprise.

I doubt any long term residents would be in for a surprise. We left Balmoral because we found out (before it was "big news") that the runway was going to be detrimental to the area.

We took a year to weigh it up. We loved our house but knew we would either have to be a part of a lobby group (which was formed soon after) and fight it or move and cut our losses. We figured we would never win so we left.

We thought house values would plummet (instead they rocketed upwards after we left :D).

We had other issues (three children in a two bedroom house and not enough money to extend without selling our IP). So we would have made more money on that house had we stayed, but luckily we bought two houses with the proceeds, so it wasn't such a bad move.

That was 15 years ago. We knew nothing would happen for at least ten years, probably more like 15 and here we are 15 years later, and still nothing is happening.

The Ascot/Hamilton area will not be too happy either. More money over there, but still not enough power to stop the inevitable.
