Formal development / building education?

Just wondering if those who are into development have done any formal education in building / construction or if you employ appropriately qualified or a bit of both?

Depends on your preference. Some people will say you don't need any formal education and can learn by starting small.

If your serious about it then why not do both. A formal qualification and start with a small development at the same time.

I wouldn't necessarily do a formal education in building / construction. That is only one part of development you need to understand but you don't need to be a specialist in it. You will hire a builder.

A developer acts more as a project manager and needs to know a bit of each field: building/construction,town planning, architecture, finance, negotiation, etc..

I'm probably 2-3 years away from even being able to do even a small development but thinking about the best way to be ready when I can start. I'm currently a project/program manager, mainly system implementation / business transformation across various industries.... guess I need to research the type of courses available.....probably TAFE?

I haven't had a look at tafe. I did a Masters in Property Investment/Development at Uni which was 1.5 years long and found it quite good. You learn quite a lot (valuation residential and commercial, property investment, property development, project management and more)

You can get a lot out of it if you want to and are passionate about it. What I liked the most was that you meet people who are in the industry. I made some good friends whom I do business with today.
