Good & bad of bording kennels for dogs

Trying to weigh up whether to put my two dogs in a boarding kennel for a couple of weeks while I sell my property to make life a little easier and also thinking of future holidays.
My friend had a dog with anxiety problems after it was attacked at a park from another dog. She tried a dog physc but what cured her was being in a kennel while they took a holiday.
What are people's experiences, good or bad? Any personality changes after the experience? I find it a hard thing to do thinking of them locked up in a cage but maybe it could be a good experience for them.

Our dog goes to the Paw House in Canningvale and the owners are lovely. The first time was a bit stressful for her but every other time has been a piece of cake for her.

If you wanted to you could do a couple night stay so they aren't stressed then a few days at home then back for a longer stay.

If they are good with other dogs and like social interaction then kennels are pretty good as they get play time with other dogs.

Good kennels will group dogs according to temperament. Our dog doesn't like small yappers so she goes with the bigger dogs, but she is also a bit of a sooky/submissive so they put her with the gentle giants :)

I think they miss us like crazy but enjoy being in a pack which is what they're really made for. I'm all for kennels, these days. They really love the company.

A little dacshund who I see when we go out walking has had a terrible habit of barking at all and sundry ever since she got one of her back legs crushed. Very anti-social and unpleasant to be around. She is very jealous/possessive, I think.

Her people have decided to go away for several weeks so have been introducing her to boarding one or two nights per weekend for the past month or so. Surprisingly, she's become a much friendlier dog in this time. Instead of threatening everyone she sees, she's become interested in others and doesn't bark like before.

I don't think it matters where you go but take a big cushion and a blanket and be prepared for eye and skin irritations afterwards - I suspect from cleaning products. They also need the right injections - I think it's called C5 - includes Kennel Cough. Need it finished (if more than one injection) at least 2 weeks before going into kennels.

Have heard good reviews from vets and dog walker about Hanrob, it's in sydney tho.

I personally will have the dog stay with my walker (Hanrob if she's not available) when the time comes for holiday - lovely person with home environment, knows what I want, will provide daily walks and exposure to kids :)

How big are your dogs?

Invstor: I also have two dogs. I make sure they are housed together, to keep each other company. That way there is less chance of anxiety. My German Shepherd was mauled by another dog during a farm stay (which I thought would be a great experience for them, but it wasn't). He ended up with a staph infection which took me a long time to get rid off. I now prefer the separate compartments and the doggy playgroups. They always come back very happy from their stay at Tara's (but that's in Cbra).

If going away for 2 weeks or more look at happyhousesitters.com.au

Free for home owners and not only is your pet looked after in a familiar environment (your home) but also means there is someone keeping an eye on your house.

Have used them twice and have been very happy.

I boarded my dogs for the first time a year back. The kennel I used would I would not recommend. One of my dogs was on medication, there were several doses not given, lid was missing. They were unable to tell me whether they had been fed that day. They quote they are happy to feed dogs, once, twice a day, I had specifically said twice day feeding. I collected them at 1100. I rang, later That day and was informed they had not been fed. I also asked they not socialise my dogs with others, I had only had my Labrador several weeks at that stage. They informed me that they did socialise my Lab with other dogs. I asked they feed them separately as my Lab would eat my other dogs food, suspect this did not happen. My dog had lost 5 kilos in a week, although think stress may also have been a factor.

Would highly recommend where I boarded my cats though.

I know many people who are happy with where they board thier dogs, and several who have house sitters. I personally would not want strangers in my home, no matter how well referenced they come.

I wont use boarding kennels ever again just from bad experience. I also don't like the set up in general, how they house the dogs etc.

I foster dogs so I use my contacts here to help with this as I know some volunteers who will take my dogs.

If I was going on holidays I would also consider a house sitter over boarding kennels.

Tiny and medium - my tiny dog sleeps in a cat crate and medium dog doesn't like to be enclosed so he sleeps beside the crate. It gives my tiny dog time out so I'd make sure they were together but include the crate.

Could you Pm the names or initials of places you wouldn't recommend please?. Thanks heaps!

Swan Valley Cattery.

Loved this place. Very small set up. Appeared to genuinely love cats, one of my cats has personality plus, and the two ladies implored me to return with her, lol. I loved they had several choices of food. Lots of bedding, including enclosed little carriers. One of my cats fretted and they told me he loved it in one of these carriers. They have a nice outdoor area enclosed outside thier individual enclosure. The cats are also let out individually for a run in the hallway and can run safety enclosed further a field. Was very happy with this Cattery and would highly recommend them.

Some of the dog kennels that we were put off by was them 'selling extras ' of one on one time with the dog or play time or cuddles etc.

I found it hard to believe that you had to pay someone to care for your pet as an extra above and beyond the daily rate.

I haven't found a place I like NOR so I'm happy to travel to Canningvale for our Weimy to be looked after. We have also fostered and looked after other Weims in the WA Club as favours.

There is no way i would leave a dog in a kennel or a foster home.

They are a family member, would ya chuck ya mum and dad in one?

Maybe a chook?Birds of a feather flock together?

I couldn't do it for the sake of self and co.
