But the world went through ups and downs and didn't truly return to full confidence until the 50s.

Gee this is a lighthearted, frothy, optimistic thread.
Clear your minds for a second, what is the real problem?? Have the assets gone? (houses, factories, workers, mines etc) No I don't think so.
Perhaps it is money and debt problems. What are these??? My answer is dollar signs, $, and zero's and ones on computer screens. Where do dollars and debt come from?? They are man made constructs, ideas, that are created from thin air.
How is world wide recession/depression, huge debt levels, lack of money, etc, solved?? Simply by changing the rules, thinking outside "current economic theory/practice".
All it takes is world wide political co-operation and an idea

i think the trouble was, and is, that banks can stick a number in a computer for a $650 application fee and lo-and-behold - you have debt, they have a security.
