Heavy Metal, let's talk about it!

So there seems to be more than a few metallers around here, which is awesome. Since I could talk about music non-stop all day, every day, I figured it was time to have a chat about metal and how awesome it is.

Currently listening to High On Fire's album De Vermis Mysteriis. It's been on heavy rotation ever since I heard it when it first came out a few years ago. So incredibly heavy, so so good. The thing I love about High On Fire is how they have evolved over the years from stoner to full bore doom. Saw them in July and they killed it (as usual). This was my third time seeing them and they have never disappointed.

Another band I've been playing a lot lately is Noothgrush. Hooly dooly. These guys have a solid reputation for being one of the best sludge bands of all time and it is well deserved. So skull crushingly slow and heavy and full of hate. Awesome stuff.

Something else that I'll put on occasionally is Leviathan, a one man black metal band. I don't listen to a lot of BM, but this guy is great. So bleak, so hopeless. Goes well with a hangover. He was featured in a Vice documentary about one man black metal bands, which is where I first heard him. If you're interested, you can watch the 3 part series here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQl6PzXU4cQ&list=RDUQl6PzXU4cQ#t=0

Anyway, looking forward to some good metal talk!

Was standing in the Queens Hotel Brisbane in 1979 when the English Punk Band the Stranglers started playing their first few songs, there was this punk #### kicker called V2 that always seemed to be up the front of most of the local bands so he starts spitting at the bass player and kept on doing so,so the bass player jumps into the the front row and smacks V2 in the head with the bass guitar V2 goes flying back into the people the bass guitar jumps back on stage then keeps playing in the end they smashed all their gear wild night, saw V2 a few night later with a blood stained bandage around his head, wild times with all the work place health and safety these days that would never happen again, only seems like yesterday..

I was expecting to read a discussion on water pollution which would then degenerate into the pros and cons of fluoride.
Or recycling televisions and mobile phones.

No need to upgrade me for a better model, I swear I'll learn how to display 1080p HD :(

I'm not right into it but there are some that I really like.

Machine head- burn my eyes Album
Soulfly - one song called (terrorist)
Arch enemy - one song called (we will rise)
Strapping young lad - exciter
Spine shank - (the odd song from these guys)

Anyway I was really surprised by what people liked here.

Spineshanks THOC is still an unreal album! Johnny then moved onto Silent civilians and there first album was solid!

Max Cavalera is a metal genius -
Sepultura
Nailbomb
Soulfly
Cavalera Conspiracy
Killer be Killed

hours and hours of pure thrash metal/groove/tribal/flamenco guitars

:)

Apparently if you listen to some heavy metal albums backwards they play Satanic messages and make you want to commit suicide.

...Much the same as an Adele album played normally. :D

I'm more of a punk/rock listener but there are a few metal(ish) bands I enjoy. I mainly listen to metal on my 'Energy' playlist which I listen to when exercising.

As mentioned in another thread Ill Nino are one of my favourites with their Confession album being my most listened to and Unframed being my favourite track on the album.

Other favourite bands are Dead By April, Mudvayne, In This Moment (awesome female lead singer who does a decent job at screaming), Breaking Benjamin, Static X (RIP Wayne Static - can't believe he was 48!). There's others but my phone packed it in and I can't look at my playlist.

Like the thread - my metal roots goes back 25 years. These days into atmospheric metal - can listen to it all day. Still love the ol'stuff also.

Scandanavian is a fasvourite - having travelled to Norway/ Sweeden/ Finland on numerous occasions I just love it.

My fav is Amorphis - last few years love a band from iceland called Solstafir

Anyone who has travelled across iceland will love this clip.

Paging Richard Feynman...

Having spend 7+ years of the last decade writing hundreds of metal album reviews, starting a small metal record label, running online metal store, interviewing dozens of metal bands and seeing hundreds of live metal shows, playing in a couple of metal bands etc I'm a little burned out talking about metal and I'm also way out of the loop.

So instead, I'm going to recommend one band: Agalloch, then talk about the metallest non-metal band of all time.

Funkadelic.

How good are they?

Brilliant, that's how.

I reckon it's impossible to appreciate metal and not like them.

If anyone's unfamiliar, here's a smattering of stuff, each off a different album.
