For anyone who is interested, the BBC has an interactive US map giving a state-by-state blow of every election since 1948. It's pretty cool because you can slide the bar across and see the transitions between elections.

Most interesting point to me were:
1972 Nixon - almost 100% Republican
Texas voting Democrat on several occasions.
I have a sense that Dem. and Reb. policies have probably fluctuated over that period. What I would love to see is some measure of how left vs right each party was when they were voted in. Maybe a thesis idea for someone.
