Home Gym

Good advice.

Not everybody wants to be super strong or super fit.
Some people don't have much time or experience to work out and don't want the inconvenience of changing weight plates on barbells.
Simple and convenient is sometimes best for some people.

A decent routine like starting strength or strong lifts or similar will probably take less time than most peoples multigym work out because it uses compound lifts but less exercises. You will notice my work outs are only 3 exercises a day.

Changing the weight can't be that inconvenient i mean it is a work out you are not supposed to be able to do your knitting at the same time. :)

Even with a machine people often have horrible form but the machine can often mask it. A bench press machine for a lot of people here are some issues.
1. After the push up/out they lock out with there arms to hold the machine up losing all the tension in there chest
2. Because it has a fixed range of motion they don't tense the core and have the legs locked in they are generally pushing from the shoulders.
3. On the lowest point of the exercise (where the bar would be on your chest) they often rest again losing all the strength and tension they should have for the lift.
4. combine that with the fact that no 2 people are the same but the machines often have very limited adjustments (esp cheaper ones) and a fixed static range of motion.

A choice between nothing and a multistation work out i would suggest someone on the multistation is doing better than nothing but if you are strating from scratch and spending some cash you will see much much better results with free weights and taking the time to learn a few exercises. My work outs are under an hour including getting changed and streching (i am big on stretching it takes me 15 minutes at the end to do them) and i only go about 3 times a week. 3 hours a week to more or less work out and improve my entire body/health/strength i think its a good ROI.

The OP has indicated that the home gym is for his Mrs too.

I wonder if she will be doing dead lifts, military press, beer keg squats etc.

I also fixed my chronic back problem of 3 years by lifting freeweights  exactly what all the specialists told me not to do:p

This is interesting...

I always had lower back issues. They got better from doing a) regular stretches and b) heavy squats once a week.

Not very likely, even though these would be the most effective weight resistance exercises to do as has been mentioned.

Like anything, there are usually many ways to achieve the same goal.
Some people will just not be into the barbell compounds, and that's ok.

if shown correct form i have seen a few rather tidy chicks at my gym do them. Funnily enough they tend to have amazing legs and arses. My gf plays sport a few times a week and swims but on the few occasions i have gotten her to the gym she preferred the compound lifts rather than the focus stuff (although we didn't get to the beer keg work out :p). From a female just wanting to 'tone up' they would be an amazing work out stick to a lean diet and body fat would shed like crazy given you are working the biggest muscles in your body and so many at once.

maybe before outlaying the money join a local gym for a month try out which machines/lifts suit and do a bit more research. Starting Strengths is a comprehensive guide to compound lift and has a decent following/support network and any genisis/fitness first/commercial gym will have a team of trainers only to happy to show you how to use machines if thats your thing.

If you want to feel the best and probably look the best you ever have in your life try p90x. I think it is the most complete exercise program out there.
If you get advanced enough you can start incorporating different exercises with a weight vest.
