I almost got scammed

I just had to share this story...

We recently won a brand new iPhone4 and as we already had an iPhone each, we decided to sell it on Gumtree.

I received a text message from someone in the Ukraine wanting to buy it. A few emails back and forth and we had negotiated a price we were both happy with. They were buying the item as a birthday gift for someone so they wanted to complete the transaction immediately and offered to pay via Pay Pal. I agreed.

Next I received confirmation from the buyer that the payment had been made. I also received email below supposedly from Pay Pal.

Subject: ***Message From PayPal*** You have a payment pending on our systems***
From: [email protected] on behalf of [email protected].

Dear Valued Customer

This message is sent to you as a confirmation of payment from one of our client ” (Mrs Marihana Kapush) regarding the sales of your Goods (iphone4 ) .Which has not appeared in your PayPal account In answer to this, we want you to know that the payment is already pending in your account but will not be visible to you until we receive your response to the payment that was made by the buyer of the items. This is due to the new policy of PayPal to protect both the buyer and seller from any fraudulent activities. So we strongly advise you to sent the item(s) to the buyer’s provided address and send the Scanned Receipt and the Shipment to prove postage in less than 6 hours so that we can fund the money into your account.

We want you to know that as soon as we receive the Shipment Scan Receipt / Tracking number that was requested from you, the money will be credited to you account within the next 6 hours of your response to the payment.
Ensure you get back to us because we do not want any delay in crediting your account.

The PayPal Team

Notice where the email was sent from? A gmail account!

I advised Mrs Marihana Kapush very politely that I didn't appreciate her dishonest behaviour and that I had reported her to the authorities.

I expected her not to respond but to my surprise she did. This is what she wrote:

am highly disappointed in you.. by the way what do you mean victim of fraud… I had paid for the phone and I believe paypal had also notify you and I believe I’d clear to you that I had pay for your item…. so kindly comply with paypal and get the phone ship out first thing on Monday so that my bank can verify the shipment details and complete the transaction of fund into your account….

there is nothing to be worry about ok… because I paid already for the phone and am not a cheat person.

am 100% guarantee and assuring of your money immediately paypal see the shipment details to verify your money will be completed into your account without any delay

Then this:

hey! look Don’t play funny with me cos I paid the iPhone already…. I don’t play with my money cos I work for it.

What can you do but laugh.

Sorry, I know this is a long post but I had to share it with you guys.

this made me laugh
.So we strongly advise you to sent the item(s) to the buyer’s provided address and send the Scanned Receipt and the Shipment to prove postage in less than 6 hours so that we can fund the money into your account.

now not using paypal apart form buying a few things off ebay wouldnt they pay the seller and you can dispute it afterwards...?

Email her back saying you believe her story that the money will clear through PayPal once posted, but tell her first you need $30 in advance (cleared in your PayPal account) to cover postage & insurance as you don't have the money to pay for it... never know your luck you might end up scamming the scammer ;)

You need a "scam/lie detector"

A father buys a lie detector robot that slaps people when they lie. He decides to test it out at dinner one night.

Father asks his son what he did that day.
Son says, "I did some schoolwork." The robot slaps the son.

Son says, "OK, OK. I was at a friend's house watching movies."
Dad asks, "what movie did you watch?"

Son says, "Toy Story." The robot slaps the son.
Son says, " OK, OK we were watching pornos."

Dad says,"What? At your age I didn't even know what pornos were!"
The robot slaps the dad.

Mom laughs and says,"Well he certainly is your son!"
The robot slaps the mom

2 years ago I got a request from a guy in Scotland, stranded etc and requesting funds to assist etc.

Long story short....I egged him along a tad and while he just happended to be in Scotland....if he could shop around and get me some real ridgy didge Haggis.

He did, I told him to go look again as it had to original sheeps testicle haggis.

Eventually I got him to send me a photo of him holding up a hand written sign saying 'I have sheep's testicles'.

Twas fun.

Gee people should get their grammar and punctuation right if they want to do a hoax email. Hilarious.

Spot on, would be a boom business providing grammar and punctuation checks for scammers, they nearly always stuff up in this department.

Don't have the skills myself but a work from home opportunity for someone.

Actually sent me $399 and I can show your how to make $800-$1000 a week and still be a stay at home Mom!

Pretty common scam along with the 'i am a sailor and want to buy ***** for a gift, i am on a boat so I cannt get to a bank but i can pay with paypal'

As gumtree suggests, it is a website for face to face deals only. Its not a rule just for kicks, its to prevent people being scammed :)

Yeah, you even hint at the fact you're willing to post for someone not within 500m of your house and they take your ad down for breach of service. Very annoying.

paypal is really bad - designed to just boost the ebay model. buyers can dispute for any stupid reason and the seller cops it. the guy that got that set up is giggling... such a high % from such volume, amazing stuff

I wonder how much stuff is scammed that people are too embaraased to talk about? I know of one person that apparanlty had their car scammed

When I was selling my Audi I had 6 inquiries from a Marine Biologist who was on a boat.

And 4 from someone on an offshore oil rig.

Funnily enough they all wanted to buy the car for their father, who was a Vicar.

Why a Vicar was wanting a heavily modified turbo set up for track days I'm not so sure.

This is a real story of my work mate's husband which happened right here in Australia.

This person bought a new camera just before travelling overseas. So he took the receipt to the airport to claim the tax back.

After getting back from the trip he received an email, with that scanned receipt attached, stating that they are processing his claim. They wanted him to prove his identity and also the bank details so that they can deposit directly.

He is about 60 years old and also the email had his receipt as attachment so he didn't suspect anything wrong and provided all the information! Luckily, my work mate realised what had happened took appropriate actions.

Lol, I had another one.

This time it was Mrs Tracey Williams from London wanting to buy the phone as a birthday gift for her son and you guessed it, she wanted to pay by Pay Pal.

Oh and I've sold the phone to someone local.

Gah! It's NOT 'The Ukraine'! It's just Ukraine. Saying 'The Ukraine' is like saying 'The Australia'. So annoying.

You're one of those guys who points out that "it isn't an ATM machine, it's just an AT machine, or it would be an automatic teller machine machine" aren't you?

You know how I know? Because that's what I do

Anyway if you guys want to talk about scams, I could tell you about the time a vacuum cleaner salesman was trying to talk my mother into putting down a block of 6 units as collateral to buy the vacuum cleaner. The guy was lucky that it I was quite young, and it was only a ground level house, or he would have been introduced to the Ocean Architect Express Elevator otherwise known as being thrown off the balcony
