iphone apps vs android apps

Should I go with android of iphone?

Anyone got android technology on phone?

Vodafone just called me about getting a new handset. (mine is maaaany years old, comes apart into three pieces, buttons sticking, facing peeling - generally kaput)

I'm happy with vodafone coverage and plan etc

I'm on $29 capped. Rarely go over.

Option 1: Get " htc Legend" phone with android technology
$29 month (same as before but more calls/internet access)

Or

Option 2:
$18 extra and get an iphone.
That means paying $432 for a handset ($18 pre month for 24 months). Versus buying outright $849 (checked this online)

I'm concerned that the android apps are approximations of the iphone apps and a bit hokey.
iphone apps are the standard. If I see someone's cool app I want to be able to get it on my phone and not be searching around for an equivalent. (I think I have just answered my own question!)

Was told "iphone vs android" is akin to "pc vs mac".
But we all know about betamax vs vhs. Betamax was better quiality but vhs became the standard.

Your thoughts?
I'm not much of a tech head..... help me out :D

I have owned both and HTC is better. The apps are the same, neither is inferior. But they cant be inter changed.

I (and many others) think the iphone is very over rated.

Same boat as Evan here. Had iPhone for 2 years, could not wait to get rid of the thing. Now a very happy owner of a HTC desire hd and have not looked back. where iPhone lacks android makes up for 10 fold with everything.

as someone developing 3 apps i can tell you we have MADE SURE we have an android version of the same thing available.

just as apple snuck up to be a decent competitor to windows (not equal, but the market share isn't to be ignored), the same has happened to apple with android.

covering all bases is the only way to ensure maximum exposure.

In order to activate an iPhone, the first thing you need to do is register it on iTunes. The next thing you need to do is give Apple your credit card number as part of the iTunes registration.

I have a real problem with this in terms of privacy. You can't make more than an emergency call until you register.

Add to the fact that all applications must be vetted by Apple, it's way too big brother for my liking.

Android on the other hand is open source. You do get more functionality if you link it to a Gmail account, but there's no requirement to use it. The app store is quote comprehensive and there's also alternative app stores popping up from time to time. I don't have the HTC (love my Samsung Galaxy S), but the basic platform is the same.

Its probably me but I've played with Android phones - couldnt tell you what kind they are so maybe they're lower end of phones - a samsung maybe.

I find they run slower and just dont have the same quality of apps.

Wait till the iphone 5 comes out. dont think its far away.

Fair enough but don't really understood that myself - I can honestly say giving out my credit card number has never bothered me. I've bought online for 15yrs now without incident and my credit card info. is with dozens of different organisations/businesses. They aren't allowed to charge it without my express permission.

Are Android apps not vetted by the likes of Google etc? I could be totally wrong so please correct me, but there aren't Xrated porn Android apps for kids to buy on there phones are there? So someone's vetting along the line somewhere.

I love my iPhone and will be getting 5 when it comes out in a few months, but haven't tried an Android phone for comparison.

If you want to go with the phone that has the larger user base (feel good, support, choice etc) then Android is about to overtake Apple and will continue on (in fact probably already has as we speak). Sort of a no brainer - iPhone is just Apple. Android is every other handset maker trying to keep up with Apple. Will clearly have much higher growth than iOS.

Hi Guys

First post here.

I work in IT and setup different phones for customers and I think the andriod is better if you are more comfortable with technology. but if you are not then go with the IPhone as it is more user friendly and easy to use.

Fair point Will. My wife does like the iPhone, but she's not as much as a geek as I am :)

Steve, the problem I have with giving Apple your credit card is that you're not actually buying anything from them. I've got no problem with online purchases either, but in this case, Apple require your credit card simply so they know exactly who is using their product. The issue isn't one of online security, it's one of privacy.

I also don't like the Myki card on Melbourne public transport because a specific card is linked to each customer and positively identifies them. Myki can easily track exactly where you are and where you've been when you're using public transport. The old Metcard allows them to track how many people use what services and when, but it doesn't know who.

I take privacy fairly seriously.

I personally choose iphone over android due to the ipad factor of things. Nowadays everything is going smart mobile

Even to develop an app you can get it done in android and iphone for like AUD250 in india.

People who want a grown ups phone get a Android phone, people who want boxed solutions get apple iphones.

As PT Bear said the samsung galaxy s is another good phone its lightening quick and has the nicest screen of them all, my wife has one and loves it.

You can install chat clients like ping or google talk and never need to use texting again. The phone links to my gmail that has all my email from the last 4 years on it all 80,000 of them. I have access to all my online documents, exchange mail from work, photos, facebook, twitter and all this runs at once while listening to music and surfing the net and getting turn by turn instructions on the GPS all at the same time the platform makes iphones look like toys.

You do need to take the time to get to learn the ins and outs of the phone but the OS is infinetly better go with the future not the locked down past.

You dont have to put in your CC details. you can skip this but then you cant get apps or anything like this.

You can do most of this on the iphone as well (except keep 80000 emails). but you can just customize everything on the andriod more which not many people will do.

I chose the android HTC Desire because if I damage my new phone,I can just put the sim card in any phone until I get a new one.The Iphone I believe(Please tell me if I am wrong) Takes a different sim card and if your phone stops working for some reason, you cant just put the sim in any phone,

I am no geek, for what I do I love my I Phone. Lol the young 20 year old somethings, I work with are astounded that an old chook like me has an I Phone.

iphones have the mini sim card that not all phones have thats correct.

like a few people have said already - if you arent tech savvy, just get the iphone, and read no further.

If you are tech savvy, then you will find the iphone, and in particular iTunes, to be a royal pain in the anus... and you will forever wish that you had never sold your soul to the apple devil and lament the pain that your iDevice will inflict on you daily - the complete lack of custimisability (without illegal jailbreaking), the inability to do anyhting other than "standard" stuff, having to use iTunes (the single worst program ever invented. Seriously it sucks wang), and also fitting in with the 15 to 20-something crowd of kids whose parents bought them the latest iphone so they can facetwit all eleventy billion friends instead of having a real life.....

.... I had the iPhone3 for two years. I liked it initially, and at the time there werent any other decent smart phone offerings, so i bought it.
After installing iTunes, my computer was bogged down to death (yay iTunes, not). Then i found out how annoyingly difficult iTunes was to use. Then i found out how unable you were to customise the iPhone.... and then after installing about 10 apps, the phone started running like garbage - super slow and irritatingly delayed. it would also often lose reception, and was unable to pick it back up unless you did an "airplane mode toggle".

As soon as i was able to... i upgraded to a HTC Desire HD, and have not been happier. No more iTunes to cause death to my PC. Drag and drop files to and from the phone with ease (no stupid "syncing"). Phone runs very smoothly and quickly. Apps just work... and you can "kill" them if they are bogging down the OS. Fully customisable. Just plain good.

Im very happy with my HTC Desire HD.

I am thinking of upgrading from my trusty simple mobile with camera...

...to a Samsung Galaxy 5 5503 Andriod phone.

I like the Samsung 5503 because it is reasonably small, most Android phones are large. I want something I can easily stick in my pocket.

I alrready have a $50/mth TPG plan which gives me $1000 worth of calls and 500MB of data. So I plan to buy the Samsung phone outright. I can get one for $290 with case, screen protector, car charger, spare charger, extra and memory (thinking 4GB)

Bargain in my eyes.

Will also be handy for looking up property related info via the Web and checking emails.

I don't believe 500 MB is enough for these phones,
