IT specialists, please comment and help

I have TPG ADSL2+ unlimited at home, my property is apparently 2.85kms away from the towers.

Now, I am getting on average of 2-3 mbps, sometime even drops down to 1mbps
This is rather depressing..

I already had my cry to TPG, apparently my average speed should be around the 4-5mbps, still, this is still way too slow for ADSL2+ I reckon

What can I do to improve this speed?

Buy new router?
Change internet company?
Change a different service? (NBN not available yet)

Any comments will be appreciated

What tests have you done so far?
What sync rate, SNR and Attenuation are your routing getting?
What other stuff do you have on the same line? (phone, fax, alarm system?)

ADSL uses the copper phone lines not wireless. Do you mean that you're about 3km from the exchange?

All ISPs will have the same issues if they are reliant on distance from the exchange.

Check out the whirlpool.net.au forum for a solution.

This is the last lot of test I have done via my phone, which I was connected via WIFI, which is similar results to when I plug the blue cable into my PC

Syn rate, SNR, attenuation, no idea what this is? How to check this

On the same line is a phone line, which has a splitter between (phone line and cable line)

Don't test via wifi please, it'll skew the results.

Those figures are found by logging into your router and having a look. In most models, they're just on a 'Status page', or something similar.

I will plug into my PC tonight and run another set of tests, and post results here later.
I will try to find these other info for router

What makes you think it should be quicker? Because it was quicker previously, or just cuz you think it should be?

Also, in the meantime, check out http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/ and play around with the different types of maps by putting in your address and seeing where you are in relation to Exchange.

Well, I am paying 60bucks a month for ADSL2+, and I can't even use TVpad that I recently purchased, (basically its a device where I can browse internet via my TV), due to my download speed I am abit annoyed about it

Try searching at http://bc.whirlpool.net.au

Are you near an NBN rollout? Got cable? I get 113mbs, 80GB / month on cable for $80-90 (I forget which) / month on Telstra Naked cable. It's not on their front page, you have to ask for it via their online chat or phone them.

Hey mate,

I switched from IINET to TPG and was slightly faster.

A few pointers:

Tell TPG to switch you on another port at the exchange and see if it makes a difference.

Are you using any filters on the moderm line, if so, remove it. I'm sure the TPG person said this already

Possible slow rates can be due to noise on the line; TPG would have picked this up or you can try yourself. Pick up the phone, any noise?

You using a ADSL2 + modem? Reboot the thing and see if it makes a diff. Do you have anothe moderm to try?

Perhaps every man and his dog in your area is with TPG which can hog up the bandwith to your area. They say it doesn't affect you but it does.

Have you ever had a faster speed than now; you sure you got the distance to the right exchange. I have two in my area aboutthe same distance. One is about a k further out.

Switch the modem off regularly and see if that helps.

It works at one of our workplaces. And before someone says it sounds like a stupid idea, 4 technicians and 3 new modems did nothing but resetting the modem when the speed slows down is the only thing that works.

Ok, I will ask about the port
Rarely use the phone line, so not notice any noise
What is the filter on line?
I have restarted my moderm a few times already, no major differences
I was thinking about trying a new modem/router

Damit; I am now confused.

Ok, so there is a thing called a line filter. Little rectangle box. Phone line plugs in to either side of it, the other side feeds into the wall. You USE this on all the house phones but don't use it on the ADSL line.

Plug your ADSL model directly to the wall socket and see if anything changes. Remember to reboot after doing so. Always reboot after any change as a standard rule.

My $2 is on the modem being connected to a UPS.
We had one like that, connected it to wall power instead of UPS and it was fine after that.

yes, I also tried plugging ADSL line directly into wall socket, no major difference
