Kangaroo Meat. Would You Eat It??

Was posting on Graingrowers thread The Future of Food and somehow I got onto this subject as I wouldn't mind farming roos.

If you would be prepared to eat kangaroo how much do you think you would want to pay for it? I saw it in Woollies the other day for $10.99 kilogram and was very surprised at this considering chiller owners only get paid $1.00 a kilo and three quarters of the work is done. Of course you need to take into consideration how much bone is in there.

Also for pet owners out there - how much would you be prepared to pay per kilo for roo meat? $2.00 or $3.00 a kilo?? More? Less?

Normally I would say yes as I have eaten some strange and weird things whilst o/s.

However, as kangaroo is best rare that is a strike out for me.

Eat it quite often actually...... only the prepacked ones from the supermarket though. Haven't tried the road kill yet.....

Yep, I love it. the family are not so much into it, so I don't eat it often. (my daughter looked at me like I was a murderer every time I ate it!!)
When I did eat it more, I bought from Coles, and I don't remember how much it used to cost.
chilliblue, I used to use it in soups sometimes too....... so that might be an option for you. Obviously it then needs to be cooked slow and long, but because its such a rich flavour, it really makes the soup warm and comforting in winter.

I use the mince quite a bit in pasta sauce.

The strips work well in stir fries and curries.

Very lean - almost solid red meat, so need to add a (fair) bit of oil/fat when cooking with it.

I like skippy but unfortunately at the price it is , $10-$17 I would rather eat steak*
If it was regularly down around $5 or $6 a kg for fillet and rump I would eat it all the time
It does make a fantastic curry

*we have a bulk meat warehouse nearby that on occasion do King Island Rump for $9-99kg and pork fillet for the same price, so the freezer is filled.

we love kangaroo and fed kanga bangas to our exchange student from Japan! We especially like the tail cooked like oxtail stew. yum. It is quite economical at the prices it is now.

Never have a BBQ without it. Fast to cook and so tender. My kids favourite meat. Better than scotch fillet and a lot cheaper.

YUMMM Love skippy :)

Kanga bangas, steak, tail stew all of it.

Unfortunately I am like DEC in that we get bulk beef , lamb and pork
cheaper ..so kangaroo is a luxury reserved for "special" dinners.

I think the kangaroo industry needs to come up with a "meat" name for kangaroo...eg we don't eat Cattle, Pig or Sheep...we eat Beef, Pork and Lamb

Used to like it but for some reason can't stand the taste now - maybe have lost the knack of cooking it properly.

Not overly price sensitive, but tend to get all our meat from butcher (big wholesaler nearby that's fantastic).

Long time ago we used to do some roo culling and the worms in the meat were sickly....yukko... We would not even fed it to the dogs for the worms in there....

I would never eat roo straight off the land....
But hey, Charlieandkath...if you farm them are you drenching the worms and other bugs out....? Surely so...?

Kangaroo is quite good meat. Best I've had was down by the bay eating a kangaroo curry (can't remember the type).

Unfortunately the kanga industry is going down the shitter, with out biggest importer (Russia) banning its importation.

Stupid international hippy groups saying we torture them, with there being murder houses. Mindless photoshopped 'evidence', when in actual fact due to the reduction in commercialised use there is a pull back in infrastructure for kangaroo populations, including water bores, medical monitoring of groups etc. Without the industry, the kangaroo populations is estimated to drop quite rapidly.

Idiots.

Often have marinated steaks from the supermarkets. Yum Yum!

I don't feed my dogs "pet" meats. Always buy the human consumption quality for them.

I think kangaroo tastes quite nice, it's tender and it's reasonably cheap. It seems to be more environmentally friendly than beef. The issue I have with it is that when you are cooking it it STINKS. It smells like cheap pet food. That really puts me off eating it. I'll eat it if someone else cooks it, but not if I have to.
