My dad setting up a pinwheel (think that's what it was called) in our front yard to let all the fireworks off.

catherine wheel - dad used to nail them to the side of the deck and let them off .... tom thumb and thumper "fights" between groups of kids, tossing them at each other on fireworks nights.

We used to do a thing called fire ball, you made a ball out of chicken wire and stuffed it full of insulation batts then soaked it in diesel that night you would light it up and kick it at each other. I would be horrified if I saw anyone doing this now.

There were no such thing as 'air fresheners'. You left the windows open to air out the house, put flowers in vases & baked fresh bread/cakes.

I recall for a time, we used to get two. A larger one (traditional size) and a
smaller one.
