mains water meter

When my water meter is turned off at the mains for my house water is still running when the taps are turned on . Is this the resposibility of Sydney Water or do I need a plumber . I was informed that Sydney Water is responsible and there is no charge for this service. Is this correct? Thank you km

Hi Karl,

Two possibilities,
1: a neighbouring property has tapped into
your supply, after the meter.
2: Worn tap washer at meter.
I had a similar experience on a house in
melbourne, water flow reduced when meter tap
turned off, but did not turn off completely.
Worn out tap washer at meter, allowing water
to pass when turned off.

I asked my plumber if it was Melbourne water
or my responsibility, you guessed it, mine!
Since the water companies were privitised,
the owner is responsible for them too.
Plumber recommended to choose a hot day, to
fix it, as you will get drenched.
There is another way to fix it without
getting wet, but its not a D.I.Y. solution.

Hi Karl,

I had that problem on one of my properties, where when I had the meter tap turned off at the front, water was still running in the house. I had Melbourne Water out within a couple of days & they replaced the tap at the meter free of charge... If it is that tap, I'd call them out ASAP (as you need to turn off the water if you are to perform any maintenance in the house, ie. tap washers, blown hot-water system, etc.)...

Sometimes if you turn the tap off with a wrench or large shifter it does the trick you might just need some more leverage.
