Mining tenements

Does anyone know exactly what a mining tenement is, and how it could affect an existing house on that land?

I _think_ it relates to the rights for a person or organisation to search for gold, or whatever they are looking for, on a specific block of land

Thanks TC. I rang DSE in Victoria and told them the tenement number, and they said it is a right for underground mining that has been in existence for over 20 years,and covers most of the town we are looking at.They are mining something like 500m underground, so I am not concerned about it at all.
