Netflix

Do you expect Netflix to target some of these US content streamers once they are in OZ?

Nah, this happens in a bunch of countries and Netflix are indifferent towards it. I wouldn't be surprised if they encourage it as a value-add. They get to allow their customers to access all sorts of content, without paying oversees licencing fees, while pretending to care.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. The Netflix guys came from a tech background, quite different to the dinosaurs in movies and television.

Potentially using it to gain market share, which would be the smart thing to do. I mean, let's face it - trying to stop piracy is a losing proposition, it's just not going to happen. You plug one hole and potentially hundreds of others open up to take its place.

Netflix just released a series (Bloodline) which they made in conjunction with Sony, so it appears at least one of the old school is trying to move into the present. I haven't watched it yet, still downloading. Have they started making movies yet? I know they did a deal with Bill Burr to get exclusive rights to his new stand up special for 12 months.

Her first couple of searches all came up with Nil results for... Cedar Cove, Parenthood, Saving Hope, Hart of Dixie

Just checked in the USA. You can get the following if you use a vpn/dns to change your country.

Hart of Dixie - Season 1-3
Cedar Cove - Season 1
Parenthood - Seasons 1-5

Saving Hope - nil (not in any other region either)

Currently the Oz content is very small (but will build over time).
But it will most likely never has as many titles as the USA.

Think I remember coming across a list of how many titles per country the other day.

Just off the top of my head (although I'll try and find the exact detail later)

USA 8,000 titles
UK / CANADA / most other markets around 4,100 titles

Australia about 1,100 titles
NZ a little more that OZ

Claimed Total of different titles across all regions was about 12,000

This would suggest that even with a USA DNS, you are still missing out on something that another market can provide.

I believe you should be able to change your DNS settings on Samsung Smart TV like I did in my Samsung Smart BluRay player. But it requires a cost of a few bucks/month. Not sure if there are any free ones available. Someone else might know.

The side benefits of a Dynamic DNS/VPN solution are quite useful for more than Netflix too.

You can also use Hulu.com (Netflix competition that has a lot of free stuff) or all the other TV catchup USA channels online which is useful for currently showing tv series.

Just visit CBS, NBC, ABC, CWtv (where you can find things like Hart Of Dixie) etc etc and you'll see what I mean.

You can also watch BBC in the UK. I just tested by watching BBC breakfast show LIVE.

This might require using a laptop/hdmi setup though for viewing on the big screen.

A VPN might be useful if you don't want the Govt getting all your Metadata.

Not having heart of dixie is a blessing :D

This is different to Hola?
AFAIK.......

At a quick glance, they will look to operate very similar.

In detail though, they are a whole lot different from each other.

Hola is a peer to peer type system that uses several user pc's to cache traffic to both spoof the geo blocking and speed up data transfer.

That means other peoples traffic exits your pc to access a site they are using, potentially leaving you open to serious problems.

What if another Hola user was to access kiddie porn or terrorists via your pc as the exit point?

With the new metadata laws going through tonight, I would be concerned about security of sharing my pc as somebody elses exit point - even if I could prove the my pc was only used as a transfer point.

I used Hola a couple years back & have moved to both Dynamic DNS & VPN's

Just an update.

I am currently with Optus (landline/internet was paying $130 pm).

I have now just signed on to Netflix Australia (Optus the supplier).
$100 per month gives me -

Netflix Australia
Unlimited internet access
Unlimited phone (landline - nationally)
Unlimited mobile calls (nationally)

Deal ends in May 2015 for anyone who is interested.
I have nothing to lose considering I was paying $130 pm (Optus), and now I will have Netflix.

Will start with this and probably end up with Netflix USA as well.

MTR:)

Finally got Netflix Australia setup today, via (Optus)

Am still looking at the options/programs/series/movies etc. I am impressed, but of course not comparing it to anything other than fox.

MTR:)

guess I need to read these preceding 5 pages and dump Foxtel. I don't know what Netflix is really, other than the internet speed really is hopeless since it was introduced, but if it's similar stuff how can Foxtel survive?

Hi Aus

I have practically dumped foxtel, only have the documentary category as I am addicted to some of the docs featured on this station. Once I have sorted out Netflix Australia will then look at Netflix USA to compare and work out whether I will include this, I think it will only cost perhaps $10 pm.

Definitely worth taking the time to sort this out as you will save big $, and end up with way more value for your money and most importantly choice.

As I was already with Optus the choice of was easy to go with them as a supplier, and I have unlimited internet access, no issues with speed.

MTR:)

Got the Netflix as well.
Yesterday I decided to watch 'The Conjuring' alone. I picked the worst night to watch with all lightening!

Nope, Apple TV has apps for most major sports leagues. About $80 for a full season I think. That's probably one month or so of Foxtel sports package? Unless you watch lots of different leagues (say more than 4 or 5), you're better of using Apple TV/Netflix.
