New chatroom

We have moved the #ipchat channel to a new server, one that gives us more control, hopefully better reliabililty, and will certainly cost Ian less (it's free !).

People using the Java web client (by clicking on the Chatroom link from the forum) won't have to do anything and probably won't notice any difference - the chat client is set to automatically go to the new server, and everything looks exactly the same as it used to. If you're not sure which category you fit into, you probably use the web client - so most people won't have to do anything at all... it's all been done for you !

People running mIRC should select the "Blitzed" IRC network in the Connect configuration, which will automatically join you to one of the servers in the Blitzed network. You should then join #ipchat, just like you used to.

People running other IRC client like ircle and such should do their own configuration if there is no predefined option for Blitzed. The server name is irc.blizted.org and the port is 6667 or 7000.

The best bit is that these guys run their own cgi:irc server, so people who have trouble with firewalls and such can use this alternative interface to the chatroom. The easiest way to do this is to go to the Blitzed website at www.blitzed.org and look for the "Quick Chat" box down the left hand side of the page. Just type in your favourite nickname, select #ipchat from the list of channels, and click on the "Chat Now!" button. It even remembers your choices for future visits.

I will be writing a FAQ document sometime soon, which should explain everything more clearly and with pictures.
