New tax ruling provides GST relief
In a new ruling just announced by the Australian Taxation Office, single owners of residential apartment buildings will not have to pay GST if they decide to strata title their building. Deputy President of the Real Estate Institute, Mr John Hill, hailed the ruling as a major win, saying "as it was (the ruling), just didn't make sense. This is good news for landlords". The new ruling does not apply to residential property developers, who will still have to pay GST if they refurbish and strata an apartment block for profit.
