Oh no, Andy... not good

DHCP on the router you "hacked" would give you an address, your MAC address maybe logged against that ip depending on the hardware/software, but it is not a ISP address it is internal to the home network like a non-routable 192.168.x.x range, therefore virtually impossible to trace.
all that information is visible to everyone who knows how to read it,
http://www.auditmypc.com/internal-ip-address.asp demonstration, external IP is in the text internal IPs in the table below,

Ummm...what happened?

Which Andy are we referring to?

Here KF....a pic of Muirhead. He hosted a popular antiques collectors show on ABC tv Friday nights 8pm. The show has been suspended until further notice.

Interesting that there's only one pic of him on the net now.
You can't say the ABC has been lenient towards someone charged for being a member of this particular minority group.

They took a softer line with journalist Peter Lloyd. He was jailed for possession of ice in Singapore, and there was suspicion he supplied it to a younger gay lover though he was never charged for supply.....not that there's anything wrong with gay...

I haven't a clue what you guys are talking about, but are you willing to front as "expert witness" for the defense? Or are you just flapping your gums?

Personally, I believe he is entitled to an impartial hearing, not a kangaroo court. Can you help?

News.com says:
THE ABC has been compared with the KGB for its treatment of employee Andy Muirhead, who has been accused of accessing child pornography.

The national broadcaster immediately took Mr Muirhead's popular Friday night television show, The Collectors, off the air when the charges became public last week.

Mr Muirhead is on leave without pay and will not present the breakfast show on ABC local radio in Hobart.

Lawyer Greg Barns said the ABC's actions in removing The Collectors website from the internet, along with all other references to Mr Muirhead, were akin to actions of the Russian KGB.

"Taking a leave of absence is one thing but to immediately make that person disappear when they haven't even had their first appearance in court is appalling," Mr Barns said.

"What they have done in their swift execution of him could lead one to think he was guilty of these charges before he has had a fair hearing.

"It is very concerning that the ABC has put its own self-interested branding objectives in front of one of the core values of Australia, which is the presumption of innocence."

I must admit that I agree.

All that stuff about how to trace what by whom and when is all very technical and impressive ....but......what if he just had a visitor in his house who downloaded the stuff? Since when are computers used by one user?

I'm going to presume it's all a horrible mistake until proven otherwise.

I'm not certain, but I think the law says anything done from your computer is your responsibility, unless the person has their own separate login / password that only they have access to. I know that this is (was?) the case for phone usage, as I dealt with some cases during my time at Telstra.

I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong

Innocent until proven guilty.

Only charged with 1 count- using a carriage service. That means the coppers raided his house, searched his computers with a preliminary detection programme and found nil.

Who is to say his wifi wasn't hacked, a boarder used a laptop to download, or his IP has been mimicked.

Let us not be so quick to jump to conclusions- leave it to the jury.

Was wondering what happened to this. Seems due process has been administered speedily over 2 and a half years.

Ya reckon ?? Due process ??

pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to possessing and accessing child exploitation material after being caught with thousands of child pornography images

183 days in jail for possessing thousands of images.

That'd be about 1 day for every 20 or 30 images.....and I reckon there would be a life destroyed in just about every image. Doesn't seem quite right.....but then we aren't learned judges.

3 months for the state charge of possessing, and 4 months on the federal charge of accessing, knocked back to 3 months. Are they for real ??

These judges who rule on these things have once again been proven to be nuts.....who knows, the judges are probably part of the same ring of deviants.

I agree that he's a grot but the question is whether to jail them or not. The judicial stance is generally that once you start getting a few thousand of these images you need to visit the big house for a period. By making the images taboo it is hoped there will be no market for possessing them and therefore people will stop making them and the kids won't be exploited. Is possessing images (that you did not initially make) more dangerous than someone who bashes an old lady walking down the street?

I don't necessarily disagree with your comments on judicial involvement on occasion.

One redeeming feature of the whole thing is that the jail was the easy part- the social stigma dor the next 10-15 years will be the real punishment. Probably on the registered sex offenders list too.

Wouldn't it be great if the police and other authorities put as much zest in prosecuting other perpetrators in our community that seem to have got off scot free for years. Amen.

Probably on the registered sex offenders list too.

.....from the same linked report....

Muirhead will be subject to a $5000 good behaviour bond for the next three years and is also listed on the state's sex offender register for the next five years.
