Open source browser - Google Chrome

Yeah it's good, played around with it today. But I'm gonna wait until they have something similar to AdBlock Plus as an add-on, I hate seeing all those damn ad's everywhere.

I laughed when I read about the INCOGNITO window option. This option has gotta be for those ..... ahmmmm.... *porn* sessions.... *cough , cough*

Safari has a similar implementation to cover up your browsing session. I would bet that the incognito option was designed by a man. heheh :)

It's what's under the hood so to speak that I'm interested in.

Seperate processes controlling each tab. Less memory leaks. This is like how a lot of the old video games was designed - interrupt driven kinda.

When a game would crash the sound was controlled seperately and would keep playing in the background oblivious to the video output to the screen.

Wife: 'Geez, you sure do look at a lot of animal sites, you sure do seem to have a sudden interest in nature, John'

Husband: 'Yes.... nature.....'

Having played around with it for a while, I've come to this conclusion:

AdBlock Plus + NoScript = Firefox 3 being a much better browser than Chrome.

When apps similar to the ones above are available for Chrome, I'll probably use it.

pros
ok it is minimalist out of the box....

cons
there's a serious security flaw in the ftp client
so minimalist where's the bookmarks out of the box?
why can't I import firefox?
I want my tabs at the bottom near my quick launch buttons and open progs tabs.
I want to block ads and flash.
I like drop down bookmarks and history

Hehe. Google is not going to block ads.

I have imported IE bookmarks- and I can view ten of them (only) in a dropdown- there's an option to "Always show bookmarks bar".

I can drag a tab into the open progs tabs. Not as good as "Near" them, but not bad.

And as I'm replying to this I notice it has a spell checker.

I'm only comparing to IE7- I don't have firefox.

Con
as an attempt to find out what is going on with the ftp security flaw, I seemed to have found that when you clear your browsing history incl passwords, they aren't completely cleared until you restart the program.

Pro. I really like the summary page which shows thumbnails of you where you've visited.

I like being able to type anything into the url, and get sensible suggestions of sites I have not visited before. Or get a Google search. (hehe- the spellchecker tells me that "google" with lower case is a spelling error).

I like the intelligent intellisense. The suggested page is one I have visited frequently, not just a complete list of matching sites in alphabetical order. For instance, I frequently refresh the "New Posts". When I start typing in "Somersoft" it suggests "somersoft.com/forums/search.php?do=getnew" rather than a list of every page I've visited. That page does not even show in a history page in IE, as it's not an actual page, just a request.

And as I type in the response I can resize this box.

It's good, it's not great. Rendering on some pages has been way off.

It's not bad for a Beta .01

No pop-up blocker. I clicked on an add by mistake, got a pop up which I couldn't get rid of easily. Even closing the browser didn't work very well.

I like the idea of each tab playing in its own sandbox, but it's still got a few security features to be added.

Winston, Good point, re: bookmarks. The whole bookmarks thing is a big big turn off for me, bookmarks in Chrome are a real pain in the bum at the moment. I'm amazed they don't have an icon for bookmarks? I guess the 1% of things they got wrong includes something that obvious..... I also found out you can only have a bookmark in one folder.

For example, I have Somersoft forums bookmarked in a few folders on Firefox. When I tried to do the same in Chrome, it wouldn't let me! If I put the bookmark in two folders, it disappears from the original folder! But then it's only new, so hopefully these issues will be sorted out over time.

Geoff re: ad's. If Google won't allow ad and script block add on's then I will definitely never use Chrome.

The damned 30 min updating continues and rereading terms of service we see:

1. Google reserves the right to automatically update and install Chrome.

This is becoming standard fare with much software these days, but worth noting.

"The software which you use may automatically download and install updates from time to time from Google. These updates are designed to improve, enhance and further develop the services and may take the form of bug fixes, enhanced functions, new software modules and completely new versions. You agree to receive such updates (and permit Google to deliver these to you) as part of your use of the services."

2. Although you retain any copyrights to content you own and use in the browser, Google says it has a right to display some of your content, in conjunction with promoting its services. Here's their exact wording.

"By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any content which you submit, post or display on or through, the services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the services and may be revoked for certain services as defined in the additional terms of those services."

3. Don't be surprised to see more ads.

Traditionally, it is Web pages and not the browser itself that serves ads. Google isn't saying it will change this paradigm, but it's terms of service don't rule that out either.

"Some of the services are supported by advertising revenue and may display advertisements and promotions. These advertisements may be targeted to the content of information stored on the services, queries made through the services or other information.

The manner, mode and extent of advertising by Google on the services are subject to change without specific notice to you."

***** I think the damned thing is datamining. I uninstalled and and cleaned the registry.

ftp continued......

ok, what chrome is doing is this....
if I enter a secured folder on my personal web space via http, I need to enter a user name and password as dictated by .access and .password file protocols. Chrome saves the password.

If I then clear Chrome browsing data incl. passwords, all browsing data is being cleared except passwords it seems. The passwords aren't cleared until I restart Chrome.

The ftp treatment of passwords seems to have a similar bug.
