UP TO 3600 jobs could be *created in a western suburbs redevelopment that is half the size of Melbourne?s CBD.

Shops, offices and light *industrial businesses will feature in the transformation of a 72ha Deer Park site owned by chemicals giant Orica.

The company will decontaminate the site under supervision of the Environment Protection Authority, with plans for new pedestrian, bike and vehicle links to the nearby rail station and retail precinct.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy said the land, 15km from the city, had been rezoned for commercial use.

?This represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a significant economic catalyst on this strategic site,? he said.

?Economic modelling suggests that up to 3600 jobs will be created during the redevelopment, which can benefit the local and state economy.?

The planned redevelopment is part of a 150ha site that is bound by the Western Ring Rd, Ballarat Rd, Station Rd and Tilburn Rd.

Orica has scaled down its operations after more than a century of use and will retain a small presence in the area.

Orica Deer Park was named as a strategic development site by Brimbank Council.

Orica Group general manager Daniel Wise said its potential for development and new jobs was significant.
