Painting and Lead

Ok, I just bought one of those DIY Lead Test Kits from Bunnings and tested one of my IPs that I am going to paint in the next few days, all the block work is good, but the test on the gutters and frames came up positive for lead...

What sort of measures should I take when sanding and preping?

Cheers,

Fourteen years ago we had our painter hire a special sander that vacuumed the dust as he sanded. He took great care with drop sheets and the special sander. Dust was almost non-existant. We had three little children. It cost us (from memory) a couple of hundred extra.

That was great... until the silly old woman next door had her house painted, huge house, no vacuum sander, 1930s house which would have several layers of lead paint, all of it floating all over the street, getting up into our enclosed verandah due to the gaps in the verandah boards.

Sometimes I do wonder why we bother to try to do the right thing when the neighbours can do as they please.
