After reading that website, I realised I knew a few people like this. (I
don't know Peter Spann but I have heard only positive stories about him from
his clients, for the record)
But I know one guy who claimed a few short years ago to have owned
'hundreds' of investment properties. I found out from his accountant by
accident that he actually owned only two (heavily mortgaged) and they were
rented by his sons.
My brother purchased from him, on my urging (to my regret) in Brisbane. My
brother recently found the developer (who is also a real estate agent) and
found that this marketeer had made over $25,000 commission on a $140,000
unit. The unit, in Coorpoaroo, has appreciated very little in the last 4
years.
He has set up an organisation (that has become very successful ) selling
over priced properties and has an 'army of novices' pushing the product. He
in fact made his money (millions) from marketing property and obviously
since has purchased properties. But the claim to be a guru was the catalyst
that got him going initially. ( he had been a bankrupt in 1984).
Many people purchased Brisbane property through this 'organisation' and
lost, especially through his own developments.
I noted that in the turmoil of the scams on the Gold Coast and QLD, early
last year, when he made a number of public comments as an expert. Apparently
he had achieved some sort of industry standing ! God help us.
The trouble is these gurus keep re appearing and keep making fortunes. They
tell the most extraordinary lies whilst looking you in the eye and even when
caught out, stick to their story and get even more hardline ! (I would
like to say more and name the person but the defamation laws in this country
prevent people from naming names, unbelievably, even if it is true you can
still be found liable for defamation)
I don't believe that the property investment/marketing/education market can
regulate itself and strict accreditation should be imposed on the property
marketing industry, separate but similar to the financial planning and real
estate industries.

it though I'm ready to concede that he isn't as authentic as he makes out.

> Just as a point of interest I found this interesting web site about so
called real estate gurus. It's based on American real estate but the
principles of detection apply just as strongly to Australia.
