Pulling out of project build at pre contract stage

Over 2 months ago I signed an agreement with a project builder in QLD to provide me with a price to build a house, including soil tests and surveys. I'm used to building in NSW where you pay around 1k for a quote and have no obligation to proceed with that builder and nothing more to pay if you don't proceed.

In QLD it appears that you may incur costs by the builder if you don't proceed. I've paid $1500 so far and have been very unhappy with their "service" and turnaround times. I doubt it will improve if we ever get to building.

I've pretty much had enough of the time blowouts, cost estimate blowouts and failure to respond to my emails and phone calls and want to walk away. Has anyone here walked away at pre contract? How much did you have to pay the builder on top of your tender fee?
