Oh boy, Steve, you really know how to get a bloke moving ...
Has nobody worked this one out yet??
Perchance, do I have the expert panel stumped?!!
a = 9.999999...
10a = 99.999999...
10a - a = 90
9a = 90
a = 10
How can this be??????????????????????
Steve, dunno what your official answer might say, but this one stems from the fact that we are multiplying a repeating number.
e.g. to help with the understanding, if we multiplied by 1,000,000 rather than by 10, what's happening is magnified somewhat, and becomes understandable.....
and that is:- by multiplying by such a huge number, we move everything 6 places to the left, but, because it is repeating, we DON'T drop 6 places off the right hand end of things !!!
This leads to the anomaly you have shown. Now, I didn't do University maths - perhaps one who has will have a more graceful way of explaining it than I do. But, I KNOW what you've done ........ and it's CHEATING
Regards,
