Rabbits and Renting (Worlds dumbest question)

Now.., this may appear to be the world's most dumbest question but we're thinking of hopping off the Renovation scene after 13 houses and renting for a while, before buying again.

If a property to rent states 'No Pets', then obviously every animal or living thing not a human is a pet, I understand that... but a tiny cute rabbit in it's own self contained wheel-about cage...??? What harm could she possibly do?

What do you think? Would we get away with it or not?

Thanks from me (and Snuggles too) :D

Yes, I thought that it would be no worries when allowing outside dogs but hey three months on, not only do I have the parents but 7 staffy pups that the female tenant is insisting on keeping until she find the right home for each pup.. The threat of Notice to Remedy and Eviction does not seem to worry her.. her dogs are her baby etc...

I being a pet person myself am at the stage I will be asking for desexed paperwork for any pets in future.. ahh do you know how much pooing and weeing 7 puppies do??

With regards to a rabbit, as long as it one rabbit and no friends, I would be open and honest and ask.. I am thinking they are as harmless as goldfish... And you would keep it outside right???? Not sure how much pooing rabbits do..

Honesty is the best policy I reckon and especially if you have ankle biters around.. Leading by example and all that.. And after getting of my box, I heading off to bed, good night all :)

If the rabbit is in a hutch it won't be toilet trained, so definitely an outside pet. You can't let them loose unsupervised, you'll never see the blighters again.

Our rabbit was in a hutch without wheels and since its owner was a bit young and not a good hutch-cleaner, it left hutch-shaped poop patches around the yard. Good compost if you want it there, not so good on a lawn. But other people may be more responsible rabbit owners than my daughter :)

Also, what is it with staffies? I'm probably being racist against this type of dog in some way, but everyone I've ever known with a staffy, with NO exceptions, has had them undesexed and bred them. My ex-neighbour is so bad with staffies (his are extremely inbred and cat-killing fence jumpers, which annoys my tenants - apparently less than it annoyed me though) that the dog catcher at the council has him under some kind of contract that he's not allowed to have any dogs of staffy appearance or they just come and take them away. If I was going to allow dogs in a house (which I wouldn't because the yard here is landscaped) I'd be asking for proof of registration and spaying. Hell, I'd probably go as far as getting my own microchip reader so I can scan the dog and check myself. Also handy for cats.

/rant against irresponsible pet owners

What you need to be sure about:

Are the cats in their correct yard or are they just jumping fences to "dump' in a neighbours yard and pee on their cars?

I love animals but i detest cats with a passion.........they have no value in society at all....killing machines only.

They make good floor mats however!

More power to the staffies I say!

Siccum Rex!!!

The staffies in question were jumping into other people's yards, killing their cats AND dogs (so I hope you are also against small dogs) and chickens, and they were also ripping my washing off the line and chewing up my irrigation system.

The dog catcher had removed maybe a dozen staffies from this guy. Every time they took one, he'd get a new puppy off someone else who had staffies. The one we trapped after it drove us bonkers was pregnant. Others were removed because they were roaming nuisances. Someone lost several dogs to one of the staffies, and lots and lots of people lost cats, chickens, ducks, geese etc.

Not the kind of dog you want in your yard when you have small children. Unfortunately the boundary fence is only 7 foot tall and a bit expensive to replace it.

ETA: does this look like a hospitible place for cats to poop? http://giraffian.com/images/junkyardbackyard.jpg

When I was a tenant...

Rented when I lived in NSW - the unit had "no pets" policy. About a year later, we rescued a budgie from the streets, asked the agent and she said fine, as long as it's self-contained (rabbits, budgies, finches, fishes).

A few months later we bought some fishes and another budgie - no problems whatsoever (agent had quarterly inspections).

  • A rabbit is a pet
  • Lease says no pets

Not sure what the difficulty is?

Hence, the world's most dumbest question...

Really, Snuggles IS house trained and spends most of the time just licking us or lying around waiting to be hugged.

You wouldn't even know it was there for they make almost no noise and is a great choice of PET for my 10 yr old daughter. :)

But...could we get away with it if necessary??

Well that's fortunate - so you didn't need to wear budgie smugglers then....

Why risk it? While they cannot sue you for damages if it does not cause any they could issue notice as you are breaching your agreement though I am not sure if it would be considered big enough to allow eviction, a rabbit? Could just be one of those breeches without a remedy landlords hate... but still I would not risk it.

Offer an extra pet bond, say $200.00 for fumigation etc if it is necessary on departure.

It does not cost you anything assuming you are sure the Rabbit will not cause damage what have you got to lose?

I have always had pets, probably always will, but if I was renting I would make sure I tell them what I had. The exception was when I house sitted for someone for 2 weeks, I had a pet that was contained in glass and had no risk of damage to the house. If I was living there I would have let them know however.

Personally, if I owned a rental, I would allow pets. If for some reason I didn't allow pets, I would consider them as requested. Something like a bird I wouldn't mind. An out door rabbit I wouldn't mind. Indoor I would (we have had rabbits and know what mess they create)

Now.., this may appear to be the world's most dumbest question ...

The worlds dumbest question was actually asked by me to my wife a few weeks ago...

Mrs Bear: Just to remind you, I'm going to that 'Johnny Cash' concert thing tomorrow night with the girls.

Me: Cool, where is it, do you need me to pick you up? (trying to look like a dedicated husband).

Mrs Bear: No, it's okay, it's just down the road in Nunawading.

<Dumb question>
Me: Johnny Cash is coming to Nunawading? That's a long way for such a small venue!
</Dumb question>

Mrs Bear: He's dead, it's a revival band. I told you this.

Me: Wow, he really is coming a long way...

This sort of conversation happens a lot at home. Mrs Bear has often accused me of 'selective male deafness', or 'taking a trip to planet Pete' ;)

Newsflash! A cat is an animal too. They are not killing machines if the owners are responsible. I know! We have six!

Ours have a cattery that runs the length of the house and they go outside in this during the day and inside at night. There is no way a bird (or any other wildlife) can enter this. The only exception is two of our older ones who have access to the "real" world these days. Neither of these are physically able to catch anything but have "issues" with the youngest of the bunch (hmm....thanks Lil for sending him home), so this pleases all.

Staffies are nasty dogs. Like Relfy, I have noticed that the owners of these awful dogs often breed them but don't bother with taking any real care with them. They tend to be locked in the owners yards, day & night. Nobody bothers to walk them, or pay any attention to them. The dogs get bored, break out of their yards and run amuck, terrifying small animals and children alike. They don't get them desexed or microchipped and often own several at all times.

Can you get away with it??? Most likely, we got away with having (well trained) indoor cats for years - as do alot of people.

Should you? Well that's a moral question. For me the question ended up coming down to doing some thing immoral and lying, and going homeless because no one in Canberra would allow animals. Needless to say I put my morals aside and lied through my teeth. Turned out the LL was an absolute jerk with not a care about the responsiblities of being a LL anyway. H went through about 6 property managers in the 2+yrs we lived there - most of them dumping him as a client. So I didn't feel so guilty about it afterall.

lol....oh my god another pesky cat lover...........suppose you are against registration of cats as well?

and you keep an animal in a large cage? yeah lovely..better off not existing if you ask me...keeping any animal even a bird caged is just not my style of looking after an animal im afraid

im all for dog lovers taking care of their animals but honestly whats the point in owning a cat?

they are disease ridden pests that kill wildlife.

sawa cat chasing a dog once when i was young, that was unforgetable..other than that they are a just a nuisance to me...pee everywhere and crap in my lovely garden....

each to their own i guess...give me a dog any day...

and you keep an animal in a large cage? yeah lovely..better off not existing if you ask me...keeping any animal even a bird caged is just not my style of looking after an animal im afraid It's hardly a cage. It's HUGE! And they come inside for plenty of cuddles at night.
im all for dog lovers taking care of their animals but honestly whats the point in owning a cat? What's the point of a dog? Something that yelps all day long at your feet? Something that most owners keep penned in their yards and don't even bother to walk it? They stink up the house, even after a bath, they still stink. And drool!
they are disease ridden pests that kill wildlife.Dogs don't get diseases? Dogs don't kill? Like I said, it's all about the owners rather than the animal itself.sawa cat chasing a dog once when i was young, that was unforgetable..other than that they are a just a nuisance to me...pee everywhere and crap in my lovely garden....
I have a huge crap in my garden right now. It didn't come from a cat, but rather one of the dogs that roams around. Cats will usually cover up after they have soiled. But not a dog. And as for peeing, dogs are the ones that pee on anything standing still. Like my car!each to their own i guess...give me a dog any day...

Dogs and cats are companion animals and they both can come with their issues, especially when you add into the mix owners who are not responsible, who abandon or maltreat or are just plain neglectful of their animals. Responsible pet ownership does not end at throwing a can of food and some water at it occasionally. It includes spending time with it, socialising it, walking it and desexing it. There should be penalties for those that don't, unless they are a registered breeder. But there aren't!

I don't see the point of dogs, personally. I don't have sheep. Most people around here have working dogs ... I've had two batches of chickens and a pet rabbit killed by roaming dogs now. Dogs kill and leave the corpse in pieces for your kid to find, at least cats eat what they kill. The poor owner of the dead little dog the neighbour's dog left in my yard was quite upset ... I rang her cos I thought it was hers, turns out it was still barely alive and bled to death in her arms :(

Our cat is a great hunter, its why we bought her (from the AWA - she's spayed, vaccinated and chipped). She keeps the mice/rats/rabbits down. The mice were driving me bonkers before, they disappeared the instant we got a cat. Not so much of an issue in the city, but very useful in the country, although I'm not so keen on her bringing rabbits inside for us. Ewww.

I'm very pro registration/spaying of ANY pet, personally. Irresponsible cat owners are just as bad, cats breed faster than dogs and having a hoarde of undesexed cats roaming, spraying and fighting is bloody annoying. Any kind of 'bad' pet its generally the owners at issue anyway, not the animal so much. Spaying the owners would help but I can't see that legislation getting through parliament ...
