Receiving new puppy - need some advise

Hi all, family receiving new puppy from breeder this Friday.

Plan A was to meet breeder in Wollongong to pickup our new puppy. Breeder sends txt to my wife saying that she can't meet us on Friday however instead will send puppy via flight so we may pickup.

We have left her with a $200 deposit via credit card a few weeks ago.

My wife texted back and said that we will pay remaining fee upon pickup. She sends txt back saying that she usually receives payment on the day before puppy leaves.

I doubt there will be an issue here however having been caught out before with tradespeople I am a little paranoid with any upfront payments.

I am thinking that payment via Credit Card would cover any issue if puppy was not delivered vs a cash payment. In any event ... interested in how others would approach this situation ?

I would be more concerned about the breeder willing (and happy?) to put an 8 week old puppy on a plane. AFAIK there needs to be special vet clearance to do this and to fly a dog isn't cheap either.

What's her reasoning to say that she can't meet on the Friday? What about following days?

Have you met the breeder in person before now?

Sounds a bit dodgy all around.

Not met breeder face to face as they are in central NSW vs Sydney where we live.

She did sent receipt of deposit under her company name.

Yes - it does sound a little dodgy ...

Have you suggested meeting at a time other than the Friday previously organised? If it needs to be of a weekend then maybe a week later?

If it were me, I would want to meet the breeder (and dog) in person before handing over full payment.

I've gone through this before - and all worked out ok.

I paid $1400 to the breeder upfront, she popped my little friend on a one hour flight to Canberra. It didn't kill him. He's doing just fine....and it was 6 years ago. Although he is a bit of a nut case - but I don't think that's attributable to his flying experience.

I had done extensive research on the breeder and spent countless hours talking to them over the phone.

She also made me "apply" for the dog too - she was really selective in whom her little furry babies were going to...and rightfully so, it made me feel good about the process too.

All in all - it worked out well. Just do your DD where you can.

Cheers

Jamie

meet the breeder, the puppy and her mother at the breeders home/where the puppy has lived.

If this isnt possible, adopt a rescue dog. full stop.

Legit breeders want to show the public where they breed. Dodgy puppy farms dont. If your puppy is from a dodgy puppy farm, you will have trouble training her, and will most likely give her up before she turns 2 years old.

The first 8 to 16 weeks are critical socialisation and learning times for mammals, and dodgy puppy farms leave them alone and covered in faeces during this time.

The flipside is them sending a product out and not receiving payment after that.

They've no doubt been burned, and won't get burned again.

I can show you my aged invoices section on my software program if you like to verify that folks aren't honest with paying their bills after receiving a service or product.

I would drive there check out the place, the breeder and then take it home.

If it is Central NSW it can only be 3-4 hours each way, have lunch on the way :)

Ask them to allow you the airfreight costs to offset your petrol expenses.

I had my 9 weeks old puppy fly from Victoria no issue, all vet check done beforehand and all cost paid upfront to the breeder. But this is a breeder that has been there for 40 years, very well known and very supportive. I need to sign a contract of sale before anything can happen.

Do you know whether the breeder is reputable? Do you have contract of sale?
If not, I'd say arrange a different date for pick up in NSW.

If you want that puppy from that breeder then you have no choice but to pay upfront.

You can choose to cancel and go elsewhere if you are not comfortable with it.

Thanks Everyone ... breeder asked us to come to their place and also will be sending across contract of sale so all sounding much more legit now.

Thanks for all your input !

Fabulous news.

I once had to put my dog on a train from NSW to SA as part of a move (legit pet moving service) ... this was nearly 6 years ago, and that dog has now passed on ... but I still feel awful as she arrived very thirsty and stunk.

I'm sure plane is a lot quicker, but I'd never ever do the train thing again.

Agree with some of the other people - if possible drive up there?

We recently did this with our new puppy - had to drive him home after picking him up. Just make sure you spot lots and let the poor fella out of the car to have a break.

Ours was a 6 hour trip, just due to the our location.

Picked up from Qantas Freight at Sydney Terminal today ! I'll post a pic shortly.

My gosh ... I was amazed at how many animals (cats, birds, dogs) were waiting for their new owners. I reckon Qantas should have their own pet flight division !

Anyways ... all good and payment was processed after dog arrived after my wife rang.

Oh, yes please!! Congratulations on new family member :)
I picked up mine from the Virgin collection centre which is a bit further than the actual airport. Right on sydney terminal would be a lot better.

I rather have them allow dogs in cabin please....
