Hi there

I'm a newie...just a question about good books on renovation for quick capital improvement. Does anyone know of any good titles?

I am considering doing one of Geoff D's seminars in March, but want something to read in the meantime. Any suggestions most appreciated.

Hi,

I've was found that www.amazon.com has an amazing range of titles that you can't find here in Oz.

I'd check there and do a search for reno books.

I bought a book in the states last year called Buy it, Fix it, Sell it by Kevin Myers which is fantastic and beats hands down any other book I've seen on the topic.

While I often buy books form the USA through amazon.com, and have learned a lot form them.... just a word of warning.
Let these books give you ideas, but a lot of what is in the American books does not apply to Australia.
In particular the concept of fixing up and selling for a profit which works well in America is hampered here by the large amount of stamp duty payable.
Another thing to watch is the tax implications that they discuss in these books are obviously not applicable here.

Excellent work book. He's not trying to push anything...just telling you the facts. He has a real 'take it or leave it' attitude. It worked for me! He won't post it outside the US, so you have to know someone over there.

Some great ideas, but you always get the impression that he is trying to sell something. Which if you look at his web site you'll see what it is that he's trying to sell...houses! Worth a read though.

and

Both of these are great books, but they have nothing that you won't find in other books.

This is the father of all reno books: http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y02Y5316739Y1614704/qid=1011502745/sr=1-1/104-4107252-4096767 How I turned 1000 into $1 million in my spare time by William Nickerson. It was written in the 1960's and is out of print now, but you can get it on http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookSearch for US$5 - US$10, plus postage. The basic principles of buying right, renovating cheaply and selling high have not changed over time.

I have read these and more over the years, but I reckon the best way for anyone to learn is to buy a place, do some work on it yourself to get first hand experience, get quotes, ask questions, get tradesmen in and JUST DO IT! You will learn twice as much at 10 times the speed an dyou'll probably make some $'s on the way.

Hope this helps

Scott

Hi All

Yep, I have to say Scott's method of "do it" is vital. Of course, one has to educate oneself (is that two "ss"?) as well but there's nothing like experience. I'm in the middle of a reno now and I'm estatic. I've got my hands dirty, baby on hip negotiating with tradespeople etc. The best thing about this is on site I can see ways of minimising cost.

Geoff Doidge's book is great easy reading and very, very relevant to Australian market. Some of the things you need to adapt to your home city as his is based on Brisbane. Have a read - I know you'll love it.

I'll update more on my renos as I go - back to Brisbane next week for the inside.

Cheers

Hi Jane

Thank you for the reply. By Goeff's book, do you mean his spiral bound "10 Lessons" book? If so, yes I have it and it is very helpful...however, I think you might be referring to another title of his I don't know?

Great to hear your reno is going well.

Hello Simon,

Have a look on Geoff D's website for his list of about 40 books he considers "must reads".

www.financialsuccesssystems.com from memory.

Or search under his name and Brisbane.

I think you have to then click onto "Books" or "Reading".

He also has details of his and Paul Eslick's March 2nd. reno. seminar up too. So you can keep up to date.

Look forward to seeing you there!

regards,

Denis.
