Researching on Melbourne

with so many companies closing shop like ford etc and now Alcoa in geelong, feel the western suburbs would be hit esp places like Tarneit where ppl live to work in geelong.

Yes it is a concern but aren't most of the migrants moving to Western Suburbs of Melbourne?

Interesting about West Footscray. I haven't thought about that area before. can you advise whether the Yuppies are already moving in masse, or it is still starting? With my budget maybe I am better off buying the next area to be gentrified?

Everyone seems to be bagging Footscray here but as someone who lives in the area (albeit in Kingsville) I have to say I love it. Amazing cafes, a lot of artists, actors and TV/film crew people live in the area (my partner and I are actors and have seen a lot of people in the industry move into the area). Seddon, Yarraville and Kingsville (SKY) are gorgeous but expensive. Footscray has 2 new hipster cafes we go to for weekend breakfasts - West 48 and Milking Station.
We love the area but have already been priced out of it and are now looking to buy in Sunshine.

From my brief visits to Sydney, SKY reminds me of Newtown in terms of population but with fewer undesirables. I mention these suburbs as they are nearest to Footscray and a lot of our friends who are priced out of SKY are currently buying in Footscray. You can still get stuff there for mid 5s and if I had that money I'd buy there in a heartbeat.

I love this one:

Just my 2c as a local.

I think West Footscray definitely has good potential as nearby suburbs such as Yarraville/Seddon etc have got a bit too pricey although it's not exactly cheap either. It's still reasonably close to the city and if/when they ever complete the East/West tunnnel then it will be well connected as will Sunshine. Having somtimes gone to West Footscray station to take the train to work in the morning, you can see that there are a lot of young professionals moving into the area which is a good sign. Like anywhere there are some nice and not so nice pockets there.

In 30 years time, when population grows another 2-3 million in each of these cities, these suburbs would be places you'd want to stay far, far away from.

For a look into the future of what these places may look like, visit the forgotten areas of London, New York City or LA.

Where are the forgotten areas of London that footscray reminds you of?

I know a few latte-sipping professional couples who have bought in footscray in the last few years. Their spiritual home might be Fitzroy or Brunswick but their current choice is between coburg, preston or footscray.

The machete wielding teens will be priced out of footscray when they come to leave home.

Well a lot of them living in commission housing so I don't think rent is a factor.

There are lots of suburbs in Melbourne with housing commission which hasn't affected their potential over the last number of years such as Richmond/Carlton/Williamstown etc......I believe Footscray/West Footscray is definitely moving out of the shadows of past reputations but this obviously takes some time.

Can someone please recommend a good conveyancer/solicitor and also a building and pest guy for western subs of melbourne ?

thanks

Grace Strangis at Sievers Lee. She's done work for me and my mum numerous times and specialises in the area. www . sieverslee . com . au

She will recommend a building inspection guy. We just used him and it cost us $550. Not sure how that compares with others but he was thorough I suppose.

One vote for Sievers Lee. I used their associate before and it seems overkill for conveyancing.

Hey esdarch, what do you mean by overkill? Did you find someone better/cheaper? Or do you mean someone else you used overcharged?

Sorry about confusing. The one I used check & follow every details carefully for a normal transaction. Apparently his fee is appropriate. Just think about using him for a more complicated case.

Surely that would be a north easterly, if due east then it would cross the bay and hit noses at Brighton full on.

Does it go all across Western Melbourne?

An easterly would blow in the opposite direction of Brighton, you're 180 degrees out.

A Westerly or WSW wind blows an odour through some of the outer Western Suburbs at times.
