Save 5% on your Bunnings/Masters DIY reno job

For those of you doing a low budget DIY reno you should check out this debit card product from ING. Will help you shave a few more $$ of your IP costs.

The offer:
Free Visa Debit card from ING with 5% cashback on Paywave purchases until mid 2013 (max $100 per transaction).

The strategy:
1) Tell your friendly Bunnings/Masters cashier you want to buy 20 x $100 Bunnings giftcards using your ING paywave card. Bit fiddly and it might take 10 minutes or so. Zap your card with Paywave (don't swipe it) with each purchase.
2) You now have 20x$100 giftcards (plus ING has rebated $100 into your debit card account).
3) Purchase your $2000 kitched or paint or whatever using the 20 giftcards.
Probably works out closer to 7% value when you consider the rebate is tax free and on a deductable purchase.
4) Go and buy 2 slabs of beer with your $100 for your efforts...you deserve it!

You can also use this to save money anywhere that has paywave...works at Coles and Woolworths by way of example. Also most service stations let you use paywave for your fuel.

Enjoy!

Does a $100 gift card cost $100 or is there a surcharge on top?

There is no surcharge. Your $100 gift card costs you $100 from your debit card. The only difference is ING will rebate $5 back within 24 hours. Max $5 per transaction so for a $2k kitchen you would need to make 20 separate transactions. You can spend that time chatting up the most attractive cashier you can find there.

Usually there is a daily limit in pay wave transactions as a security measure. AFAIK, it's $100 per day whether it be one transaction or spread over 10. So you might have to visit a few days in a row......

Hi Kesse,
AFAIK that isn't quite the case. I think the problem would be that Paywave might detect multiple $100s at a time and think they are accidental repeat transactions (instead of 1 transaction). You might need to load the giftcards with different amount ie $100, $99, $98 etc....

By which time you have aquired 20 of these you have really gotten to know the cashier well. If he/she is attracted to fruitloops you are probably in. Realistically it is a tough ask on a $2000 spend, but if you are like me and run back to Bunnings every 5 minutes to buy bits and pieces when doing a DIY project it should save you some beer money.

"Purchases using Visa payWave
Under $100 in Australia (other limits may apply outside of Australia)
Applies to Visa payWave purchases under $100 where no PIN or signature is required. For purchases of $100 or more, simply enter your PIN or sign-see daily limits above."

It's referencing the "Daily Limits" but there is nothing clear set out in the T&C with daily limits for paywave.
