Should I move to the US?

Ahh but Mr Fish , don't you live in Nth QLD anyway. I miss Nth QLD , wish we stayed, that can be lifestyle .

Would you believe 12 yrs back I knocked back a block on Castle hill , Townsville , ocean views , for 60k . He even offered to finance it - stoopid !

Cheers

Had a friend from work ask his relatives in Nevada. They say brand new appartments on the main casino strip of Las Vegas are down to 35K and people still won't buy them because there's no one to rent them to. For those who like a bit of long term speculation maybe...

That's crazy.

My only contact with the US comes from a trip to Hawaii, where you have multimillion dollar properties in and around Waikiki and up past Diamondhead to Kahala, then round the back you have almost 3rd world villages - with huge Dodge Rams out the front. In between, right up from Downtown Honolulu, you have run down two storey ghetto apartments with groups of dodgy looking gangstahs milling around outside, and this is about 3 mins drive from The Hilton, Westin and all the other bluechip land along the beach.

So I can definitely relate to what DanielG is talking about. I'm sure other parts of the country are even worse than Honolulu.

Hell, might as well even thinking about moving to Cambodia or something!! If you are already CF+ now, you could probably live like a king sending the excess across every month!!

I am too frank and they are too defensive. :D

This nails one of the problems of living in the USA, which I did for over 2 decades, and we still have strong financial and family ties there. It is unfortunately too easy to insult Americans because of their passionate beliefs, and I spent years walking on eggshells trying to keep my mouth shut.

It took a long time to realise how deeply paradoxical the country is. I always think of America as the Extreme country. From religion to capitalism, everything is more intense than most other countries.

As for lifestyle, I never know what people mean by claiming an Australian lifestyle - lifestyle is what you make for yourself.

Yeah I never know what they mean either , seems pretty ordinary to me as an average . Although you guys up there with all the weather can have it pretty good in the right situation , gotta pay for it though !
With the amount of people and states in the US , then with Mex & Can' top & bottom ,I could well understand the diversity . Not that any of the states here would give it up but I often think it'd be cool if Australia sliced it's states up into 15 or 20 , creating some diversity and it would be harder for big brother to keep tabs on us all that way too . At the moment it's all to easy so they go overkill on everything and getting worse by the day - not enough to do !

Cheers

Get 5 mates to put in 10k, buy a unit on the strip and use it for holidays once a year!

How much are council rates and body corp?

You would need to check the body corp charges. I've heard that the banks don't pay BC fees on condos that have been handed back. Remaining owners have to make up the slack.

That is also as I understand it, at least in Florida it is.

Buying into multiple streams of liabilities; No thanks!

Best bet over in the US is to own all the land and associated dwelling(s) and call the shots and control expenses. ;)

On average most people seem to basically just work , come home , pay bills , get a little bit of time with the family , work again . take a trip now and then , pretty well it .
Seems nothing they couldn't do anywhere else really .

sure its the same, but, its all the minor things - your work, come home, pay bills, holidays, etc, might be interleaved with 'remember not to walk that way home, saw someone get rolled last week', and 'consider getting a gun licence for wife's protection' and 'no we cant go out and get dinner its dark now', 'look to move to a new suburb as this one wasnt as good as our research told us'

sure, an exageration, but im sure there a plenty of daily 'hassles' you would have over there that you might not here.

There are large parts of my little regional town that you should keep personal safety in mind, especially (but not only) at night.

I would humbly suggest that if you threw a dart at a map of The Great Plains you could find a pretty peaceful town. I would also guess the locals would be patriotic as hell and would get up my nose.

I can think of a couple of other countries with religions where you can be executed for being raped, or for talking about their "god" in a certain way.

And look out if you are woman and go out in public without a male to escort you. And look out if you are a woman and not covered from head to toe with only your eyes visble; oh'yeah; the men can dress how ever they want. Good one.

This is not the way it is done in the States. The good thing though is the USA gives everyone the freedom to express their own views and have their own religion.

For the record (and I hope you agree having lived there) Australia is a better place to live.

Yep I hear you , that's why they always laugh at our so called riats , how do you spell riats anyway, that we're having kittens over & it's all over the news . Cops wouldn't even be called out for over there , childs play .
It is funny though , you do wonder how ordinary people cope, keep family safe, whatever.

But on the other hand , you would also think that with 330mill and so many states , it'd just be one big city mentality so I'm often amazed at how redneck many of them seem.
Even this overly patriotic thing Sunfish mentioned, usually goes with redneck.
They seem passionate though , heaps of fire , something Aussies have lost b/c we all just do as we're told and manipulated into & let our Gov's do as they want with us and our country these days. Cops , laws, big brother acts almost outnumber the damn population . And with every election comes the competition to increase it even more outdoing the other guy, really getting on my nerves .
With things along these lines I like the idea of us being much much more populated and having more variety.
I'd be very happy though with the way we are so small, isolated and our few states otherwise , the place just needs more .
As is they're also all just going mad on percentages for every bit of tripe on everything really , and those percentages are a joke, they've just got nothing else to hound us about.

Yep it's true alright, I saw stuff on it myself and I see a few other threads about it around here too. Allot of them were 4 and 500k only a yr or two ago, some a lot more.
I reckon you couldn't go wrong myself who cares if you mightn't rent it out for awhile . it's only 35k .

35 K I can buy outright. But sorry I dont believe it, I'm sure they list it as 35K but its either a ghetto which requires extreme renovations or there are some hidden federal taxes somewhere or other charges that add another 200K.

Vegas is froth and bubble, a proxy for "Wealthy America". Without the exuberant wealthy it has no reason to exist, just as Detroit now has no reason to exist. In fact they don't even have the means to exist. No water, no industry, no power. Everything is imported at high cost.

It is oft said here property can't fall to zero but it has in Detroit (literally) and is nearly there in Vegas. At least Florida will always have some appeal and some industry.

Vegas was a unique situation when we lived in L.A

People would go there from L.A just for something to do, to party, to have a weekend away, and of course; there were your pathetic gambling fraternity.

I was there staying on the 26th floor of the Caesar's Palace, and my view was of almost all of vegas. The joint is surrounded by dead earth - uninhabitable desert, and I remember thinking; "who would have thought to start up a town out here?"

So, I reckon you're right SF; without the gambling and the pizzaz, the place probably wouldn't exist.

I followed Daniel's link to Vegas property.

There were 2,476 listings and the median was listed at $119,000. Built in '06 with 4 br, 3 bath it was absurdly cheap by our standards. Catching falling knives come to mind.
