Sometimes life throws a curve ball....

I believe in GOD. I stopped for a while, thinking of you both Penny and Amy I am praying for you. I am sure.......
‘He will cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you will find refuge.’
(Psalm 91:4)
We are with you..................

hey - cheering you on while you kick butt. go girlfriend!!

i will agree with all the alternatives other have suggested as have heard that laughter, reiki, alkaline diet etc work wonders ... talking to one of the top medical massage therapists in newcastle a few years back and he mentioned that cancer cannot live in an alkaline body.

so, try and cut acid from your diet, and he had had patients that swore by using ground apricot kernel suppliments (apparently you can get them from south australia) as they are highly alkaline.

if you google around a bit, there are very comprehensive lists of what foods are acid and what are alkaline.

you are such a strong person - and curve balls are thrown at us for a reason to add depth and colour to our lives. fight you fight and then find your reason

Just to clarify - for those who subscribe to this theory (very similar to "hot"/"cold" or yin/yan in TCM) it is "acid forming" foods and "alkalizing" foods.

A lemon is very acidic, but is alkalizing to the body according to this theory.

We're open to suggestions, particularly on diet and immune system. the Dr's discourage take vitamin tablets when I'm on chemo, so we need to look at getting the immune system up through food. I'm going to try to make fresh vege/fruit juice for breakfast, which is one of my favourite things.. just a struggle with time.

cheers

If you are looking for diet strategies, my suggestion is:

- contact the Gawler Foundation for recommendations of a nearby GP or centre that specializes in their diet and lifestyle techniques.

- contact the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine for a nearby GP who uses a diet related approach.

- the author and researcher I respect most as at the cutting edge on healthy diet is Dean Ornish. He advocates that more vegetarian food is better.

- you sound like you've got a sharp mind. If you don't find it too exhausting, you might search pubmed. But just search the literature reviews, otherwise you will get bogged down in specific papers that only a specialist in the field could weight appropriately.

- Cochrane Collaboration is a highly regarded source that produce regularly updated medical reviews, and is often more palatable for people outside of a specialty.

- Australian and US patient support groups often keep an eye on the literature and summarize the latest and greatest.

- someone mentioned ginger above. Several years ago I was involved with a national prostate cancer support and information group, and read the literature broadly. Research of ginger's positive effect on prostate cancer was scientifically significant. I am unaware of its effect on other cancers.

Some of my views on cancer :(This is not medical advice. It is provided as information only, and any action you take should be with the consent of your doctors).

- tumors generally proliferate faster than normal tissue, and therefore have a higher rate of energy consumption per cubic cm. Very often, they cannot get their energy from oxygen mediated sources because blood flow into the tumor is poor due to rapid growth of cells and poor capillary development within the tumor. They therefore rely moreso on glycolysis, the breakdown of blood glucose. Some natural and diet approaches focus on stabilizing blood glucose so there is not an abundance available for tumors. Some therapies include 4 day fasts, which slows and sometimes reverses tumor growth, probably because the tumor is not getting enough energy. I have personally seen 2 people with prostate cancer improve dramatically after a 4 day fast and Calorie restricted diet. However, I would not recommend you do anything like this without the knowledge and consent of your doctors.

- despite the above, one might be confused whether they should exercise to encourage better blood flow throughout the body. My view is you are better to get regular gentle to moderate exercise. This will facilitate the movement of white blood cells towards the tumor and stimulate these immunity cells as well. It is also important to stay well hydrated to keep your blood volume and interstitial fluid levels adequate. This facilitates transport of oxygen and nutrient to cells.

- avoid getting overly tired. better to retire earlier and still your mind and body, and use your visualization and meditation prior to sleep. this will help your immune system. yoga stretching will also help relax muscles and help blood flow (and delivery of white blood cells) to all organs.

- Keep in mind it has been proven that when you visualize a limb relaxing and light flowing into and healing it, the blood vessels in that limb dilate and allow more blood to flow. And blood is life. You could get a similar effect for you chest, by visualizing a sun or ball of light in your heart and lungs, gradually intensifying its color and size.

- juces are a better way to get more anti-oxidants into your system. but better to keep them around 2/3 to 3/4 vegetable and drink with food, otherwise they may spike your blood glucose, and their Calorie content would be high. raw beetroot, ginger, celery, parsley are regular constituents. I'd recommend you get one of the slower juicers like the Oscar, Champion, and greenpower machines here.

- Ann Wigmore and Norman Walker wrote books several decades ago about vegetable/fruit and wheat grass juicing. The above machines should be able to juice wheatgrass but it is time consuming and I don't necessrily think it is worth the effort. I am not up with the latest authors in the field but Walker was certainly the pioneer in the field. Some of his views are probably off the mark, but doing more of what he suggests would still be very beneficial.

- dark green leafy veges (asian greens like bok choy, kale, are highly recommended for cancer....as are lots of anti-oxidant (high ORAC value) foods. blueberries are excellent and pomegranates superior but harder to get. I'd recommend you eat whole blueberries rather than juice them.

- enemas or colonic irrigation are often recommended when fasting. There's various opinions about their benefits. I personally think they can help but the technique has to be informed.

- finally, in my experience, if you are going to put effort into your diet and lifestyle, you want to pay 100 times more attention to your mindset and emotions. Forgiveness and grace are extremely important in the Gawler and Ainslie Meares paradigm. A key point: How does one reconcile when to forgive and when to fight. That is a big question and the wisest healer I met said that often you have to determinedly drive out impurities before you will have peace inside. Sometimes that will require Herculean sustained effort. As you genuinely apply and sensitize yourself to what is going on internally, you will know when it is right to focus on forgiving or fighting.

Penny all the best with it, your will power is inspiring. :)

Good post Winston. I have just watched a doco about nutrition/vitamins and the effects on the body, mentions curing cancer through vitamins etc, its called 'FOOD MATTERS'. Available on amazon or via torrent. A very good watch.

All the best
Daniel

I didn't need the professionals to give me the rundown.... I'm a compulsive googler, so I knew all the stats, clinical guidelines, evidence based practice etc before I'd even gotten to the oncologist. I prefer to know the worst case scenario, and then I can work my way up from there!! I just have to protect my hubby though, cause he can't handle the negative stuff.
This is exactly how I handle any crisis; gimme the facts! I become a compulsive researcher, reconcile myself with the worst-case outcome, then set about doing what I can to get a better-than-worst outcome. :) This was one of the approaches to problem-solving recommended by Dale Carnegie, and I've found it very compatible with my personality.
So here I was, jobless, with cancer, and risk of being half face paralised.

One of the worst (if not the worst) days of my life.

So I'm with you, supporting you from here. You'll get through as I did.

I'm fine now, face is same as it's always been, there was no need of radiotherapy coz the doctor did an amazing job and extracted the entire parotid gland. I can't feel my ear and will never do. It'll stay numb for good. That's fine, I don't normally move my ear much!
I'm so delighted to hear that you've had such a positive outcome.
When I was sick about 13 years ago (football sized tumour of the kidney) I watched every funny DVD I could get my hands on and laughed as much as I could.
I'm a big believer in the power of laughter. Even if it doesn't actually do anything with regard to your physical health, it's got to help your mental health.

Well, my Kiva team-mate, I'm so very sorry to hear this awful news, but delighted that you're so positive and surrounded by so much love. My prayer for you is that you find the gift in this experience, and live a long time afterwards to appreciate your new-found wisdom. Big hugs to you.

And of course to you, too, Amy. Do keep us informed.

Penny exploring all avenues as you're doing is good.

One thing you may want to do is contact whoever is the oncologist most heavily involved in research and clinical trials in your state.

I cannot stress enough the importance of being treated by a good proactive oncologist.

They can wrangle things to get you onto trials outside of their criteria if they don't think there are consequences that will impact negatively, or when the trials look promising.

One that I have found is in the UK by a Professor Michael Seckl with a drug named PD173074.

Hope some of this helps.

Hi,
Please accept my thanks for all the well-wishes.
For those who don't know me, 'Amy' is actually a 64 year old male who was diagnosed with prostate cancer 18 months ago.
Penny is 42, and deserves all the support we can muster at this difficult time.
I thank you all for giving her such good advice and encouragement, and I guess Penny realizes that we at Somersoft are behind her 100%.
Once again, best wishes, Penny.
Amy

So does Amy. :)

We can pray for - or "send positive thoughts" to - both of you. :)

Just a quick update.. had my first round of chemo this week..(3 sessions over 3 days). Amazing results so far! The coughing and wheezing has already virtually completely stopped, so the chemo seems to be doing its job.
I've had some nausea and lightheadedness, but not coughing more than makes up for that!!
So, I'm feeling great (I think the anti nausea drugs also have a "high" effect, so probably enjoying the impact of that as well!!:D).
Not coughing and wheezing means that I'm also sleeping much, much better, which has to be a good thing as well.
So far, so good! Thanks for all the well-wishes and positive stories and suggestions. I think positive thoughts and support are a significant key in fighting cancer, and its good to know that I have so many support people in different contexts all cheering me on!!
cheers

Good to hear all is going well Penny, and that you've still got your great attitude after being a pin cushion for the last few days!

its a known fact that cancer cells cannot grow in a pH of 7+, your blood is always between 7.35 and 7.45 when you are healthy, organs like the pancreas can be at 3 (very acidic).

in japan they use water alkalizers in almost every home and the cancer rates are very low, if you can keep your body alkaline the cancer cannot grow, things that make your body acidic include alcohol, tobacco, red meat etc etc.

look up a pH food chart in google, and eat only alkaline as the lower your pH the more strangled the cancer will become.

also garlic has been used for thousands of years due to its healing properties, its a natural anti biotic, the only one in the world that the human body cannot build a resistance too, in fact its the only thing that can kill MRSA staph infections caught in hospitals (no drug can do it), its also a powerful anti fungal and there has been massive success in curing cancers with it, but mainly in the digestive tract.

however it affects the whole body, it comes from the chemical reaction when the cell walls of garlic are damaged, it combines two chemicals to make acilin when crushed and cut, its the acilin that actively destroys cancer cells (look up clinical trials).

however it MUST be eaten raw, the chemical forms in 0-15 minutes after cutting and has a half life of only a few minutes, its very hard to eat raw (mix with food), but very good for you, if you eat two cloves a day you will NEVER get the flu again.

however, never buy chinese white garlic, garlic isnt meant to be white, chinese garlic in coles etc has no value as the bulbs are cut for faster drying and its dead, its also irradiated when leaving china which destroys everything in it.

modern medicine is not very good in my opinion, but your best chance is trying every approach available.

[Garlic — The Science and Therapeutic Application of Allium sativum L. and Related Species. 2nd Ed. 1996], we read of clinical trials whereby those who ate raw garlic doubled the immune natural killer cell activity. Diallyl sulfide significantly improved the ability of the macrophages to fight tumor cells. Koch and Lawson also recite epidemiological studies indicating that those people who consume the most garlic and onion have the fewest cancers. And pre-echoing what my Nicobase said above, Koch and Lawson say "The consumption of black or green tea,, as well as of garlic, is known to be a culinary practice which inhibits tumorigenesis in the lung, forestomach and esophagus"

Just thought I'd give you another quick update... I've finished 2 rounds of chemo now. Continue to feel strong and healthy, and apart from my bald head, you wouldn't know that there was anything wrong with me. And of course, since I'm wearing some very glamorous wigs, no one does know there is anything wrong! I've never had so many comments from strangers about how good my hair looks (no-one has realised its a wig so far!).
I'm breathing easily and can exercise etc with no problems. I'm working pretty much full time, just working a few less hours per week than before. The Drs seems very keen for me to stay as active as possible, so I haven't really changed my life very much so far! I can't do overseas business trips (missed a trip to Japan a few weeks ago), but I'll do be doing my first domestic trip in a couple of weeks.
After round 3 of chemo, I'll have another CT scan and we'll be able to review exactly how effective the chemo has been......... looking forward to that!
cheers
