Splitting house into units

Say I buy a big house with lots of bedrooms, like the one below

What are the requirements to split the house into self contained units and renting each seperately. Do I have to get the individual units registered through some body before I can rent them out. Is there a limit on how many of these units/people I can fit into each house. Does zoning affect this strategy. What about the legal issues like tresspassing between tennants, communal areas, etc.
 
My advice is to ring up the local council and speak to a town planner about this. There are all sorts of planning & building regs you will have to comply with.
