Stamp Duty on First Home - But Owned Overseas?

Hey guys,

My partner and I are in the process of buying our first home here in Australia (QLD) and would like some advice. We were of the opinion that as it's our first home here in Australia that we would be exempt from paying stamp duty. (house is $485,000)

However, from reading some sites, you are liable for stamp duty if you owned a house overseas. We lived in Ireland for a few years until 2008 where we owned our own home for 2 years. Would this mean that we are liable for having the pay stamp duty here?

As we are both Australian citizens is there any way that they would check on this? It's looking like the stamp duty would be around $8500 if we have to pay.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

As Ace said you have to pay it. But I highly doubt data matching exits for property in Ireland. Probability of being caught low, consequences of being caught high - including a possible criminal record. I wouldn't do it for such a small sum.
