Sydney - Canberra corridor

Hi all,

With all this talk about our growing population and expanding cities, and when combined with the theorists talking about the need of new cities and/or megacities, then has anyone here looked at the Sydney Canberra corridor?

This seems to be relatively untapped in terms of growth. Yes, we have Bowral which is a rich retiree area, Mittagong (whcih is on city rail) and then there are other small places and also, Goulbourn which is 2 hours from Sydney and yet still an relatively inexpensive place to buy into. Plus, all of these areas are on the Syd-Melb trainline and are also serviced by a very good freeway system.

The infrastructure is there, the roads are there, the trainline is there and there are 2 major cities in close proximity - ie Sydney and Canberra.

So would i correct in thinking that this corridor can be a good area for the long term expansion of greater outer Sydney - or a good area for population over flow from the respective cities?

Comments?

Thanks

have a look at the NSW Sydney - Canberra Corridor Strategy
http://www.planning.nsw.gov.au/plansforaction/pdf/sydcancorridor_regional_strategy_final.pdf

a brief excerpt states:

The Sydney–Canberra Corridor
is a region of significant potential.
Linking Sydney and Canberra, the
Region is a key State and
national corridor for transport,
communication flows, goods
and services. The volume and
flow of goods, people and ideas
represents a signif cant economic
advantage for the Region. As
well as its links to Sydney and
Canberra, the Region enjoys
ready access to Wollongong, the
Illawarra and South Coast, and
the south western slopes of NSW.
Together with a highly valued rural
setting and proximity to other cities
and regions, the Sydney–Canberra
Corridor provides significant choice
in terms of lifestyle, employment
and development opportunities.
The current population is
approximately 137 000, with both
the northern and southern ends
of the Region experiencing high
growth, refl ecting their proximity to
Sydney and Canberra. There are
a number of smaller towns in the
Region that are within commuting
distance of Sydney and Canberra
that are also experiencing
signifi cant pressure for growth.
The Region’s population is
projected to be 183 350 by
2031, a growth of 46 350 people,
requiring an additional 25 200
dwellings and 27 800 jobs.
The Region sits between Australia’s
largest city, Sydney and the
national capital, Canberra. As both
cities increase in size so does
their infl uence on the Region. This
is most evident in terms of the
extent of commuting and where
development is mainly occurring,
being generally at the northern and
southern ends of the corridor.
Historically, the Region was
serviced by a highway of a much
lesser standard. As a result,
centres in the Region and their
communities were a lot more
self-contained. Large pastoral
farm holdings were more prevalent
with the character of places more
strongly linked to agriculture

Sorry about the formatting, i couldnt seem to change it.

DH works with quite a few people who comute from Goulbourn to canberra for work each day. But they all own their own homes, no renters.

Personally I don't think Goulbourn is all that cheap for what it is.

I don't know enough about the sydney region to comment there.

Having said that I am interested to hear everyone elses opinions on this.
