The Off Topic Thread #2

The bigger offspring is already on the internet. But only on a select few whitelisted websites, and of course she has her own website (not linked anywhere though, addy has only been given to relatives). I don't think she's actually related to the rest of us though, doesn't have any interests in common

Watch this space for when the 2.5yo works out how to haxx0r teh intarwebs. Won't be long now, she's already way ahead of the bigger one for working out anything that has buttons on it to press.

She's really cute with the baby - she tries to help with everything. Big one hasn't actually seen him awake yet!

I've been thinking about getting a puppy or something lately, and was browsing some of the shelter websites this afternoon. Curiousity, as much as anything else.

Anyway, this ad jumped out at me. It's well-documented that cats have substantial internet skills, certainly, but this one must've forgot to mention its property investment prowess as well.

:D

LOL! They kept telling me the property market was going to crash so I sold up everything and now I'm homeless. :D

Please please please do not get a dog from a pet shop (I pressume you aren't anyhow given you are looking at that website). Remember as well as the well known animal rescue organisations there are private rescue places too, which if you're looking for a particular breed might be worthwhile looking into. For example my mother got her dog from Chihuahua Rescue (I pressume you want a more manly dog than a Chihuahua :) ), and there is a couple here in Victoria who rescue and take care of neglected Chihuahua's and find good homes for them. They do it all in their own time and self funded (so they rely on donations). The small charge for the pet is to cover the vet bills, but ones they can't find homes for they keep themselves. If anyone is interested in either getting a Chihuahua or would like to help them financially:

The various animal shelters are the best place to get pets. Being a bit blunt here, but some of them get so many animals through a lot of them *have* to get put down, so they put down the ones with noxious personalities and leave the nice snuggly ones for sale. Sure you'll get an older animal, but it will be a good temperament, which is a huge improvement on getting an untested pup or kitten from a store. And lets not go into how most of those (pups in particular) animals are bred

We got our cat from the Animal Welfare League in Adelaide. She's lovely. There was a lineup of humans looking at the cats, and our cat picked us :)

I got my first pup from a pet store, and got the second one from a farm, which was cheaper and she isn't fussy about her food... not fussy enough actually...

So how are most of these puppies bred Elf? My pup from the pet store was a little scared at night for the first couple of days... I assumed she just missed her mummy

Puppy mills are legal in Australia, as long as the proprietors meet the minimum standard of care. The law is different in each state and territory, but usually requires that the dog can stand up, turn around and lie down and that the pen has a partial roof. The dogs can remain in these cages their entire life - there is no requirement for socialisation, grooming or bathing, human contact, exercise and certainly no requirement for love.

Puppy mills sorta remind me of how other animals humans use are treated :(
Maybe that's why my pet store pup was waking up crying the first couple of nights, unlike my confident farm pup.

The farm I bought my second pup from farmed crops btw, they just had a couple of dogs. They could easily sell the pups, who were all free to run around, even into the house, and before ~3 months, pups could only be reserved, not taken away from mum.
