The Stirling Prize is the big architectural competition in the UK. This year they've got three interesting residential projects, and I thought that I'd post them as a source of inspiration.
Astley Castle
Astley Castle burnt down in 1978, and was recently rebuilt as a holiday let. The architects inserted a modern building into the ruinous shell, and it looks absolutely fantastic.
Park Hill
Park Hill is a massive '60s public housing scheme in the centre of Sheffield. Like a lot of these, it was allowed to become rundown and a blight on the city.
Urban Splash, a developer specialising in renewal of unloved buildings, took it on and gave it a makeover, and it's looking pretty sharp. I think it's a good example of what can be done with something, albeit on a rather larger scale than anyone on this forum is doing.
The left side shows the old appearance, whilst the right is how it looks now.
