Travel costs question.

Hi all. This may have been answered before but I could not find anything.

I have an IP in central Victoria that is a period place with the nice brass door furniture and light switches etc. I have had two door handles fail and have had to source replacements from Melbourne. I have had to take the old units down to match up the new replacements as the internet was not very helpful.

My question is the trip to Melbourne and back (180 km) claimable on tax ?

Thanks in advance.
Chris.

Hi, yes.

If you keep a logbook then it should form part of your investment use portion of same.

If you don't, then you should be able to claim based on the tax office rates per kilometre. This will vary slightly depending on the size of your vehicle's engine.

Claiming too many trips for each property may raise flags with the tax office but your accountant should help you decide what is reasonable to claim.
