Vic Group Self-build building scheme

It's not my cup of tea, but a work colleague who was one of a group of 12 families who participated raves about this. It was hard work but very very worthwhile.

Her total costs were about $170k (for house and land) yet she reckons that the house is worth around $270k. All the neighbours built in the same street, so the people know each other well and it's all owner-occupiers.

If possible, they're thinking of doing it again in about 3 years to upgrade, while keeping the existing house as a rental. Though not people who I'd imagine were property investors, I was impressed at their plan and I have no doubt that they will succeed.

I love these kinds of schemes, people learn things, a sense of community is established, hard work is undertaken.. wins all round.
