Victim of identity Theft .....

Following on from this thread and a 40 min phone conversation with the bank We now have a more complete picture of what happened and it's a scary near miss ( hopefully ) .

It seems since early this year there has been a criminal syndicate operating out of NSW who have succeeded in getting millions out of accounts in Australia and what appeared from first reports to be an amateur attempt at old style signature fraud was the last move in a large scale criminal ring.....

Unknown to us for several months they had complete access to our accounts ....

Apparently we had to have had malware on out computer which tracked key strokes obtaining our account numbers , passwords and all of our identifying details . Some of these will delete them selves from the computer after they have got their required info . We have upto date Trend PC .

Not only did they get this info from our computer but they also managed to obtain copies of both our signatures and used this and the above information to go to the bank with 100 points of ID , provide the bank with all our info , accounts etc and our signatures on the appropriate forms to be added as co - signatures to our accounts .

This is targeting all of the banks .

Recently ,they went to the bank in another state and presented all the appropriate documentation to start making withdrawls . Only a decision by the bank to check with us via phone alerted them and us to what was going on.

So , computer is having new software installed to detect malware.... Passwords will be changed on a regular basis . The complexity of the password isn't a problem We need to contact all our banks and make them aware that this has happened happen and ask what other things can be done to increase our level of security . I know with one bank , when we make movements over a certain level we get sms's a code which has to be entered before the transaction will proceed .

As the full details of our id are now in the hands of a criminal syndicate
.....sigh ......we have been advised to register with Veda Advantage so we are notified of any attempts to use our info to obtain credit facilities on our behalf.

The bank have assured us that if our funds had been accessed they would have refunded the money.

One irony is that in a recent episode of Bones , one of the characters was a victim of a more successful attempt to do this and I remember thinking how frustrating it would be to have that happen.

A lucky escape is one way to look at it, a positive way! Veda alerts are great, definitely a useful service. Also regular checking of security and accounts, I caught a $800+ charge to the CC last year by someone who had swiped the cards info.

This particular system isn't targeting credit cards and they don't normally have your signatureS

We've had a couple of attempts CC fraud at that before which occurred after an OS trip .

Five years ago my bank account was accessed by keystroke hackers. This is how I think I got it. I was only using free virus protectors etc which don't provide enough security. I was promoting Perth Property Meetings on this site. I had made an email address public and I was responding to all email enquiries regarding meeting. After a meeting I had received a second email from a forum member. I opened email which had a smiley face and Porn link which I didn't open. I found out later you don't need to open lInks to get viruses, spyware, etc. also realized later that attendees that added my email address to their enail address book could pass on viruses etc without even knowing. Lucky for me I had more than one computer so when my infected computer became totally unusable I could log into my bank account and see that a user from overseas had been accessing my bank account. I had received an automated email from bank on a Sunday advising my daily withdrawal limit had changed from $2000 to $10000, would be effective in 24 hours and To contact bank if I hadn't increased limit. Luckily that was as far as they got, it's not a nice feeling though! And inconvenient as all your bank accounts get frozen until you upgrade computer security. I hope you don't have any more troubles from them!

Close call SeeCh.

So what system do they recommend to keep the malware out?

I have Norton 360 and it seems to work reasonable well.

SeeChange - it states you have up to date Trend PC, what did you use before that?
Back then we were recommended Trend Micro. We were using a free version. The paid version picked up 15 viruses, can't remember how much Malware, spyware.

Scary stuff indeed.

I purchased a vehicle from a wholesaler today via a "pay anybody" online transaction whilst at the yard.

A few minutes later got a call from the bank to verify if I was the person responsible for the transaction.

Very impressive!

Notification of increased limit would be more gaolbreak via sms.Code is sent via sms to increase limit but i dunno if your bank offers this.

I watched a tv show show this week (Katie..Katie Couric) and it was about hackers gaining control of your computers and viewing and listening to everything, if you have a webcam on your computer.
This woman who thought she had all the correct computer protection was shocked when she started viewing/listening to her and her daughters on the screen. It took the specialist guest 10 minutes to gain access...even though she had done everything right.

The low tect solution is to put a sticker over the webcam.

we have been using Trend since mid 2000's
Prior to that we had used norton and Macaphee with nothing but problems

at that stage trend was meant to be better .

The Bank investigator said that all of the main antiviruses had their weaknesses.

She recommended Malwarebytes as an additional layer of protection. This came up with six potential threats - five relating to Babylon and one other

Also advised to install Trusteer Rapport as an additional layer of security

Any other thoughts ?

CBA-NAB-ANZ,, are like that I change all the passwords--ASX--BANKS-- every few weeks, and the minute I change the Bank passwords a simple text will come within 20 seconds saying the passwords have been changed ect,it also helps to screw all your transfer limits to 200 bucks even then the above Banks will text you within 20 seconds, all can be set-up online within the banking websites..imho..

Bloody ******* they are, but it's like trying to turn back the tide to stop these mongrels.

I have Kaspersky and part of that is that when you login to banking you can use the special Kaspersky keyboard that sits there ready over the field you need to populate.

This encrypts your login and password so even if they are using key stroke technology they won't be able to get your stuff.

I am sure they will find away around this soon

what if you have your password hidden in a word document (eg mdkk214dattolkkjfjj55 etc etc) and you just copy and paste the password (using the mouse) when needed for banking. Could hackers still work out your password?

When you copy it, it goes into clipboard. In some applications when you paste, it stays in clipboard allowing you to paste it to multiple places if desired. There are programs that allow viewing of said clipboard.

Dang.

Maybe clear the clipboard straight away? Or is it too late by then?

Yes, they SMS now.
Good idea to keep payment limits down as you do get your money back but it can take a while.
