visiting Vietnam in Oct any suggestions

Hi All

We have booked to go to Vietnam in October. Presently have no idea what to see or do so looking for suggestions from those more experienced travelers amongst us.

We will be flying to HCMC (Ho Chi Minh City) and staying for 15 days.

Cheers

Loved HaNoi - disliked HCM, although my son loves it. He was there last month, and went to a cafe where the owner was an agent for the North Vietnamese, but the main patrons were GI's on leave. While they were downstairs eating, the NV were upstairs plotting the TET offensive! The cafe is now owned by the son! Of course, they are heroes in Vietnam. And on the walls are all the original photos etc. Amazing.

HaNoi is like going back to the past. Everyday their speaker system throughout the city blasts off with communist propaganda. Do the walking tour through all the original city streets. Hanoi has the best French/Vietnamese restaurants. Do a 1 day Junk tour on Halong Bay. Vietnamese Airlines are WAY better than our airlines here. Planes are new, with lots of room. You tend to catch a plane to visit all the tourist areas. Visit HoiAn for a lovely beach DaNang). Skip NhaTrang - dirty and sleazy.

Having grown up with a teenage brother at the time of the Vietnam War and conscription, going to Vietnam was an amazing experience.

go to hoi an....its like stepping back in time....lush rice fields and simple village life. You can get tailor made clothes (esp business suits/shirts) there for very cheap.
halong bay is stunning, or hue if you want to see temples and imperial palaces.

How exciting!
Yep agree with Pushka, get up to Hanoi and Halong Bay if you can. Amazing!
However I would do an overnight stay on a junk boat if possible. Ocean Tours were excellent to deal with.

Yes, I meant overnight on a junk boat - but forgot to change it. When we went, it was May, and 38C. So damn hot. So we all jumped off the boat and into the water. Very high. Pearls - there is a Department store in HCM that consists of lots of smaller stalls. Some are fake, others are real jewellers. The real ones have scales to measure the gold weight. We bought an exquisite and rare Gold Pearl, earrings and bracelet for $300. As a set they are valued at over $2000 in Australlia.

From HCM- Do 2/3 day trip down the Mekong Delta. Go to the war memorial and the chu chi tunnels..

From HaNoi- Do the Halong Bay junk boat overnight. Go to Sapa. You get the overnight train up (stay 1-2 nights) and get the overnight train back. Lovely scenery and people. Nice walks. Interesting culture.
