Website feedback before we go live

Okay - I know I have done much real estate investing stuff lately! - - been busy on another front ... but you old fogey die hards (like me) will be please to know I am booked in for a TAFE interior design course and we're contemplating ripping the kitchen out over Easter ...

Until then ... we are about to go live on our website and would love any feedback from such a knowledgeable but non-involved test crowd.

Feeling a little excited and this is going to be a huge week :D

How utterly unhelpful, but the first thing that stood out was the k in your trading name! Heh.

Website looks good! Does remind me of your competitor Patrice Newell but I guess you're limited with shades of purple seeing as it's the type of garlic.

ETA: I find it so amusing that you have to have a FAQ addressing the dirt on your garlic... our society is so strange to NOT expect food grown in the ground to have remnants of it. It's fresher that way! Reminds me of an article I read not too long ago encouraging people to eat "ugly" food because of our high wastage world-wide because we've been trained to expect and desire perfectly coloured and shaped fruit and vegs.

How picky do you want me to be? :D

The banner up the top - the 'shop' section is the only one with a drop down box. For the sake of consistency can you highlight the Ts&Cs somewhere on the shop page or link to it? I kept hovering my mouse of the other options waiting for the drop down box.

FAQ's - I like that you put on there how to grow your garlic but aren't you doing yourself out of business?

The banner at the top when you scroll down and becomes fixed to the top of the window (don't know the correct terminology sorry!) it's not very smooth and a little bit jumpy. It goes from being a banner the same width as the main white section to the width of the screen and it's not very fluid.

Is it worth having an 'about me' to personalise it a bit and introducing yourself?

I'm being really pedantic here otherwise the site looks great and I think I will be buying some garlic later in the year :D

Looks a good clean site, but I don't like the clour if one does a quick search it seems to clash with another site in your area, not that's important as it's always difficult in predicting outcomes in a environment of concentrated success, and btw I go too the Rocklea fruit market every second week when they let the general public in a kilo of garlic from the Brisbane valley farms sells for 20 bucks just too give you a idea of price up this way,but your target market is different, good luck I hope you do well..imho..

Doesn't look good on mobile (S3), the top frame seems to skip.
Don't like the color, looks depressing. Also looks like there's a fb feed in there which is a big turn off. Keep them separate, there's now a backlash and movement away from fb.
And why did you spell garlic with a "k"? If you want to be fancy, spell it garlik or gaaleek.

Looks great! Very professional.

Someone once told me to always have your contact phone number easily visible on the first page (more relevant for small business rather than multinationals).
I find this myself, I want to call a customer, client or often a supplier. I just want a phone number. If it is easily found on the first page it is a simple job for me as a customer and the web site has worked.
I am often amazed on large firms sites how hard it is to find a a phone number and business address. If it is not critical that I use them I often give up.

Good luck with your venture!!

Thanks for the feedback guys ... some we can address and some we can't.

With the mobile devices (ie, mobile phones) I'll talk to the web designer regarding that - but I gather, from what I've heard, mobile websites are completely different from personal computer websites, so hence you need two different layouts that will load depending on the device (sounds complicated).

Noted re the drop box

The kg of garlic from Brisbane Valley Farms doesn't include postage and shipping to your door - and is not organically grown ... non-organic growing farms can use up to 40 different chemical sprays over the growing season, from herbicides to fungicides and everything in between, so they are less labour intensive and can afford to be cheaper. These types of farms also offer very limited varieties due to only growing what can tolerate the chemicals and mechanical harvesting/planting. Different market.

Growing your own garlic - well - some will anyhow and some won't. One only has to do a google search to find out how.

Hubby is already stressed that there is to much personal stuff on the website ... so won't be putting an "about me" on there.

The spelling of "Garlick Developments" is actually a family name (not mine) ... but may remove it

I actually am surprised to find out that there are people who would buy just garlic online

Sites good and simple by the way..at-least on the desktop. I like the blog section..personalizes the website...perhaps you may want to add more about the local area and keep the content fresh....

good luck....have you thought of linking back to an organic mouth freshner supplier to increase revenue :)

Remove the mobile number and get a 1300 number that directs to it. They cost very little.

It will make you look like an international garlic conglomerate!!!

Fine tuning requested, so I will add that I find this bit kind of "jars"

we not only grow Shiraz grapes( , HORSES ) and our own vegetables and beef, but also organic, hand processed garlic with amazing flavour to tempt the tastebuds of all garlic lovers.

I would leave out the "horses" bit, it is not really relevant to garlic and the sentence reads much smoother to me, try it and decide :)

Adding on what others have said:

- Consistency in product photos would be nice (all on white background for example). The photos are THE most important thing on the site.
- For when the site is up and running, out of stock markers on the thumbnails of products would also be nice (e.g. a "slash" in the corner of the image") so people don't click, then cry tears of disappointment when they're unable to buy
- Your footer is a bit out of whack. The copyright text is jammed right against the top and the socialise is butted right against the bottom right.

Oh, and creating a responsive website design (that works on mobiles) is easy -- if your developer knows what they're doing, it won't add much more work.

Spoke to the designer an apparently the website is generically mobile compatible ... unfortunately, there are so many devices that unless we construct a completely separate website for the other percentage that aren't generic, there will always be a few devices that show the site a bit "odd".

At this stage - the business isn't big enough to justify the extra expense, so will run with website as is.

Thanks for the feedback guys - hope to be live tomorrow

I agree with Richard's comments and ok180's comments re: the 1300 number.

Also,

If it was my business I would definitely consider Instagram in this day and age over any other social media. http://instagram.com/#

There have been many success stories for small and/or new businesses attributed to Instagram. I would upload whatever you have done with Facebook and in your blog...to Instagram.

Wish you much success.

website looks good. Has a nice feel to it.

One thing, didn't really like how the whole page moves when top bar (where search, facebook link) appears.

Are you sure your web designer knows about SEO?
Meta description is too small. There is no Meta keyword!!

But.. the site is pleasing to look at.

I agree - was never really happy with that sentence, but took me a while to get it right - so have changed it now. Sometimes one gets a brain freeze over words.

The designer is all over the SEO ... meta keywords are pretty much irrelevant nowadays, due to overuse and abuse by search engine spammers. I admit she wanted some particular wordings for increased SEO that I have overridden as didn't read right to me ... it's not like there is a huge amount of competition if you put in your search Hunter Valley garlic - or even NSW garlic.

I know the colours are similar to a few other garlic producers - but really - the logical colours are either purple or green ... yellow, orange, red, blue etc are not colours associated with garlic or farming. I think we are different enough to be individual - Patrice has a lot more purple, tons of purple, a very bright purple (and light blue) ... Natalie has a lot of green ... HV garlic are similar with purple (a different tone) and white but their site is a lot more rustic.

Anyhow - lots of thanks and here we go ...

Lizzie, I think the site looks great and I love the logo.

I wouldn't have thought about buying garlic on the net, but just last week a friend showed me a sealed pack of 1kg of peeled garlic. I was surprised at her buying that quantity.

I think I'm going to order some from you because I like the organic, no pesticide idea.

When will you be up and running and ready for orders?
